Chapter 8 - The Man Across the Street.
Thomas did not run when Claire crossed the street.
He stood beside his car with both hands visible.
"I came to tell you before Bell did."
Claire stopped several feet away.
"Tell me what?"
Thomas looked at the certified charter in Mara's hands.
"That I asked him to destroy it."
Claire felt the last piece of trust disappear.
Bell stepped closer.
"Years ago," he said.
Thomas nodded.
"After Lydia died."
Claire's voice was flat.
"Why?"
"Because Eleanor convinced me the clause would tear the company apart."
Claire laughed once.
"You mean it would stop her."
Thomas accepted the accusation.
"Yes."
He explained that Eleanor had discovered Lydia's trust shortly after the funeral.
She feared Claire would someday control enough shares to challenge her.
Thomas authorized Bell to remove the founder charter from active company files.
Bell was supposed to destroy all copies.
He secretly preserved a certified one.
Claire looked at Thomas.
"And now you suddenly regret it?"
"I regretted it almost immediately."
"But you stayed quiet for nine years."
Thomas looked older with every answer.
"I thought I could repair it without exposing the family."
Claire shook her head.
"That sentence has cost me millions."
"It has."
"And it almost cost me my company."
Thomas lowered his eyes.
"Yes."
Mara checked the time.
They needed to return to headquarters.
Claire turned away.
Thomas called after her.
"There is one more thing."
She stopped.
"The debt isn't just debt."
Claire faced him.
"What does that mean?"
Thomas glanced toward Jonah.
"The lender is Northline Capital."
Jonah frowned.
"I know the name."
Thomas continued.
"Look at its ownership."
Claire felt a chill.
"Who owns it?"
Thomas answered quietly.
"Eleanor's brother."
The entire refinancing suddenly looked different.
If Vale Mercer defaulted, Northline could gain control over major properties.
If Eleanor pushed the company into an unfavorable loan, her own family could profit from the failure.
At eleven fifty-seven, Claire entered the boardroom carrying the charter.
Mara placed the certified copy before the board secretary.
The founder protection clause automatically paused the refinancing resolution.
Eleanor stood.
"You cannot rely on a document that hasn't governed this company in decades."
Mara answered.
"It was never repealed."
Paul Benson read the clause twice.
Then he looked at Eleanor.
"Why weren't we told about this?"
Eleanor ignored him.
Claire placed another document beside the charter.
"Ask about Northline."
That changed the room.
Jonah displayed the ownership structure.
A holding company led to another holding company.
That company led to a private trust.
The trust beneficiary was Eleanor's brother, Charles Voss.
Several directors began speaking at once.
Eleanor lost control of the meeting for the first time.
Thomas entered behind Claire.
He took his seat.
Then he raised his hand.
"I request an independent investigation into the refinancing process."
Eleanor stared at him.
"You don't know what you're doing."
Thomas looked at his wife.
"For once, I do."
The motion passed nine to two.
Claire's officer suspension remained in place.
But the refinancing was frozen.
The alleged misconduct review now included Eleanor.
Ethan stood near the window, pale and silent.
Claire approached him after the meeting.
"Did you know about Northline?"
He shook his head.
"I knew her brother was involved in financing."
"That's not what I asked."
Ethan met her eyes.
"No."
Claire believed him.
That made what came next worse.
Mara walked over holding a newly produced board affidavit.
It had been filed that morning.
The affidavit stated that Claire personally instructed Ethan to access her company credentials and approve transfers on her behalf.
At the bottom was Ethan's signature.
Claire looked at him.
His face collapsed.
"I can explain."
Claire handed him the page.

And this time, when she walked away, Ethan did not follow.
