CHAPTER 2 — The Moment Everything Changed

By the time the bus reached the next stop, two black SUVs were already waiting.
Men in tailored suits stepped forward the moment I stood. One of them spoke gently, but firmly.
“Mrs. Robertson, we’re here for you.”
The entire bus fell silent.
I didn’t correct him.
For the first time in two years… I didn’t hide who I was.
They helped me down carefully, shielding me and Toby as if we were something priceless. Because to my father—they were.
Within minutes, I was seated inside a quiet, temperature-controlled vehicle. A doctor was already waiting.
“Your stitches need attention,” she said softly.
No judgment. No delay.
Just care.
As the convoy pulled away, I glanced back once.
