Chapter 12 - The Box Vivian Wanted First.

Vivian stood in the archive lobby beneath white fluorescent lights that made her elegant navy coat look almost black.

She did not seem surprised to see Ethan.

That was the most unsettling part.

"You always were impatient."

Ethan stepped between her and the records desk.

"How did you know we were here?"

Vivian looked toward Martin.

"Some habits never change."

Martin checked his phone.

He had not contacted her.

Neither had Claire or Rebecca.

Then the archive manager quietly admitted the facility had sent an automated access alert to every listed account contact when the PRIVATE box was opened after hours.

Vivian was still attached to the account.

The mystery was disappointingly ordinary.

But what she wanted from her own box was not.

Rebecca addressed the manager.

"Please preserve the access log and do not destroy or alter any records associated with either account."

Vivian laughed softly.

"You make this sound criminal."

"No one said that."

Rebecca's calm answer irritated her more than an accusation would have.

Ethan held up the old trust agreement.

"You knew this expired."

"I knew your father created it because he didn't trust your judgment."

"It was an emergency reserve."

"It was protection."

"It never owned my house."

Vivian's face finally changed.

Only slightly.

But Ethan saw it.

She had been counting on him never reading the original.

Claire stepped forward with Owen asleep in a carrier against her chest.

"You told me the trust already controlled the house."

Vivian looked at her.

"I told you the family had an interest."

"You said Ethan could lose everything if I didn't sign."

Vivian's silence was an admission without words.

The archive manager returned to the counter holding a notification slip.

Vivian's private box had been scheduled for removal Monday morning.

The request had been submitted online Thursday night.

Ethan looked at the form.

"Where was it going?"

The destination was a document destruction company.

Vivian reached for the slip.

Rebecca took a photograph before handing it over.

"Cancel the request."

Vivian's voice was cold.

The manager nodded.

The box itself could not be released to Ethan, but Vivian's attempt to remove it had changed the atmosphere.

She was no longer acting like someone trying to clarify a misunderstanding.

She was trying to control what remained visible.

Martin stared at her.

"What's in the box?"

Vivian looked at him with open contempt.

"Records that belong to me."

Ethan moved closer.

"Then why destroy them now?"

Vivian's answer was immediate.

"Because I am tired of this family living inside old paperwork."

Claire gave a small, humorless laugh.

"You built this entire problem out of old paperwork."

For the first time, Vivian had no reply.

Then a man entered the lobby carrying a set of keys.

He was older, maybe seventy, with a raincoat folded over one arm.

The archive manager recognized him.

"Mr. Mercer?"

Ethan turned sharply.

The man's last name was Mercer, but Ethan had never met him.

The stranger looked at Vivian, then Ethan.

"I'm Thomas Mercer."

Vivian went completely still.

May you like

Thomas was Ethan's father's older brother.

A man Ethan had been told died before he was born.
