Chapter 3 - Monday Was Already Waiting.

Ethan wanted to confront every accusation in the kitchen, but the fear on Claire's face mattered more than winning an argument.
He took the folder from Martin, picked up Owen's diaper bag, and guided his wife toward the back door.
Vivian did not follow them.
That frightened him more than if she had shouted.
She simply stood beneath the warm kitchen lights and watched them leave.
"You have the weekend to think."
Ethan stopped at the doorway.
"Think about what?"
Vivian lifted her chin.
"About how much worse this becomes when you decide I'm your enemy."
Ethan said nothing.
He drove Claire and Owen to a nearby hotel rather than stay in the house that night.
The decision felt ridiculous until Claire admitted Vivian still had an old emergency key.
"Why didn't you tell me any of this?"
Claire sat on the edge of the hotel bed with Owen asleep beside her in a portable crib.
Her eyes were exhausted.
"Because every time I tried, she made it sound small."
She described the months after Owen was born.
Vivian had begun with helpful gestures.
She brought groceries.
She folded laundry.
She watched the baby while Claire showered.
Then the help became instructions.
The instructions became criticism.
Claire was told which pediatric appointments were necessary, which purchases were wasteful, which friends visited too often, and how much time Ethan should spend at work.
"She kept saying she was saving me from mistakes."
Ethan sat beside her.
"And I kept thanking her for helping us."
Claire shook her head.
"You didn't see it."
"I should have."
There was no accusation in her expression, which made his guilt heavier.
At eleven that night, Martin called.
Ethan answered immediately.
"Tell me what happens Monday."
Martin took a breath.
"The papers are not complete."
Ethan's shoulders loosened slightly.
"So she can't do anything."
"I didn't say that."
Martin explained that Vivian had submitted copies of several documents to a private lending office connected to the family's old business accounts.
The lender had not approved anything yet.
However, the packet included a statement claiming that Ethan had agreed to a restructuring plan.
"I never signed anything."
"Your signature isn't on the authorization."
"Then we're fine."
Martin hesitated.
"There's an attachment that says verbal approval was witnessed."
Ethan stood up.
"Witnessed by who?"
Silence came through the phone.
"Martin?"
"By me."
Ethan's anger arrived so quickly that he had to walk toward the window before speaking.
"You told them I approved it?"
"No."
Martin's voice cracked for the first time.
"Vivian put my name on the witness statement before she sent it."
Ethan looked toward Claire.
She was listening now.
"Did you know?"
"I found it today."
Martin lowered his voice.
"That's why I brought the folder to the party."
"Why didn't you call me first?"
Another pause.
"Because Vivian told me she had something that could ruin Claire if I interfered."
Ethan's anger disappeared beneath a colder feeling.
"What could she possibly have on Claire?"
Martin did not answer immediately.
May you like
Then he said the sentence that kept Ethan awake until morning.
"I think that's the next document you need to find."
