Chapter 9 - The Meeting That Never Happened.

Sunday morning brought rain and an email from a family mediation firm Claire had never heard of.

The subject line read: RESCHEDULING REQUEST - MERCER FAMILY CONSULTATION.

Claire read it twice.

"Rescheduling?"

Ethan opened the message.

It referred to a consultation supposedly requested by Claire two months earlier.

The listed concerns included household decision-making, family financial oversight, and temporary support arrangements.

Claire's name appeared as the requesting party.

"I never contacted them."

Rebecca called the firm.

The receptionist confirmed that an online intake form had been submitted using Claire's name and email address.

No appointment had ever occurred because identity verification was incomplete.

The email used for the intake looked almost identical to Claire's real address.

One letter had been changed.

Ethan leaned back from the computer.

"She made a fake email."

Rebecca remained cautious.

"Someone did."

Claire looked at her.

"You still need more?"

"I need the cleanest possible record."

The firm agreed to preserve the intake information and provide it through proper channels.

An hour later, Vivian called Ethan.

He almost ignored it.

Rebecca told him to answer only if he felt able to stay calm.

He put the phone on speaker.

"What do you want?"

Vivian sounded composed.

"I want my grandson to have a family after this is over."

Claire stiffened.

"What exactly is over?"

Vivian paused when she heard Claire's voice.

"This misunderstanding."

Ethan laughed without humor.

"You hired someone to photograph my wife."

"I hired someone to verify facts."

"You created paperwork using her name."

"I prepared options."

"You lied about insurance forms."

"Claire was overwhelmed."

Claire leaned toward the phone.

"Stop describing me like I'm not in the room."

Vivian went quiet.

Claire continued.

"I trusted you in my home."

"And I gave you more support than your own family did."

"Support doesn't require secret paperwork."

Vivian's voice sharpened.

"You have no idea what Ethan was about to do."

Ethan frowned.

"What was I about to do?"

"Sell the house."

The accusation stunned him.

"I have never planned to sell this house."

"Martin told me you were considering it."

Ethan looked at Rebecca.

Martin had said no such thing.

Vivian continued before he could respond.

She claimed Ethan had discussed taking a job in Denver and selling the property without telling Claire.

Claire looked at him.

For a painful second, doubt passed across her face.

Ethan saw it.

Vivian heard the silence.

"Ask him about Denver."

Ethan's stomach dropped.

He had received a job inquiry from Denver four months earlier.

He had never pursued it.

He had never told Vivian.

Only one person outside his office knew.

Martin.

The call ended before Ethan could ask another question.

Claire stared at him.

"Was there a job?"

"An inquiry."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I said no before it became anything."

Claire believed him, but the damage was done.

Vivian had revealed one true secret inside a mountain of manipulation.

And now Ethan had to ask the question he had been avoiding.

What else had Martin told her?
