Chapter 2 - The Paper She Never Saw.

No one moved for several seconds.

Owen made a soft sound against Claire's shoulder, and she immediately rocked him as though the familiar motion could keep the rest of the room from falling apart.

Ethan lifted the top page from Martin's folder.

He did not understand every legal phrase, but he understood his wife's signature.

He also understood the address printed beneath it.

It was their address.

"Start from the beginning."

Claire looked at Vivian before she looked at Ethan.

That small movement made his stomach tighten.

"Three weeks ago, your mom came over while you were at work."

Vivian folded her arms.

"I came to help."

Claire continued as though she had not heard her.

"She said the insurance company needed updated household forms because Owen had been added to the policy."

Ethan turned another page.

"This isn't an insurance form."

"I know that now."

Claire's voice trembled, but she kept going.

She explained that Vivian had arrived with a neat stack of papers, colored tabs, and instructions about where to sign.

Owen had been crying that afternoon, Claire had barely slept, and Vivian had insisted the paperwork was routine.

"She kept telling me you had already reviewed everything."

Ethan's eyes went to his mother.

"Did you tell her that?"

Vivian did not blink.

"I told her you trusted me."

"That's not what she said."

Vivian's jaw tightened.

"Do not turn this into theater, Ethan."

Martin closed the folder halfway.

"There is more."

Vivian snapped toward him.

"You've said enough."

Martin's face changed.

Until then, he had looked like a reluctant guest trapped in a family fight.

Now he looked like a man who had made a decision.

"No, Vivian, I haven't."

He removed a smaller envelope from the folder.

Inside were copies of emails addressed to his accounting office.

The subject line read: MERCER HOUSEHOLD RESTRUCTURE.

Ethan scanned the first page.

Vivian had asked Martin to prepare preliminary documents that would give her temporary administrative authority if Ethan and Claire were "unable to manage the property responsibly."

There was no mention of insurance.

There was no mention of Owen's coverage.

There was only money, property, and control.

"Why would you need authority over our accounts?"

Vivian gave a tired sigh, as though Ethan were a child failing to understand a simple lesson.

"Because you have been careless."

"Careless how?"

"You spend too much."

Ethan almost laughed from disbelief.

He worked as a project engineer, paid every bill on time, kept emergency savings, and had never asked Vivian for money.

Claire stared at the papers.

"You told me Ethan wanted you to help organize everything."

Vivian's expression hardened.

"And he should have."

That answer broke something in Claire.

She shifted Owen to one arm and pulled the white apron loose from her waist with the other.

"You lied to me."

Vivian stepped closer.

"I protected this family."

"From what?"

Claire asked the question softly.

Vivian looked directly at her.

"From you making decisions you don't understand."

The cruelty was quiet enough to sound almost polite.

Ethan moved between them.

"We're done."

Vivian looked past him toward Claire.

"If you walk out tonight, you may want to ask your husband what happens when that document reaches the bank on Monday."

Ethan froze.

Martin looked down.

Claire stopped breathing for a beat.

May you like

It was Friday night.

And Monday was suddenly much too close.
