Chapter 15: The New Horizon

The morning sun broke warm and bright over the cliffs of coastal Maine, washing the small, sunlit kitchen in a golden glow.
Sarah poured herself a cup of fresh coffee, listening to the soft, rhythmic crash of the ocean waves outside her window. The nightmare of the Vance estate was already a distant memory. Federal indictments had swept through the family corporation like a wildfire; Eleanor and David were currently sitting in a federal holding facility awaiting trial with no bail options, their empire completely dismantled.
Maya—no longer hiding behind the stolen name of an alias—toddled across the hardwood floor, giggling as she chased a stray sunbeam. There was no bruise on her cheek, no fear in her eyes—only the bright, unencumbered joy of a safe childhood.
Marcus sat at the kitchen table, casually tossing an apple in his good hand, his shoulder finally healing beneath a loose flannel shirt. He looked up and smiled as Sarah walked over, lifting Maya into her arms and burying her face in the toddler's soft, sweet-smelling hair.
"You okay, kid?" Marcus asked softly.

Sarah looked out the window at the endless expanse of the blue sea, feeling the weight of the past completely lift from her shoulders. She was no longer running. She was finally home.
"I'm better than okay, Mark," Sarah smiled, kissing the top of her daughter's head. "We're free."
