Chapter 4: The Mechanic

There was a heavy silence on the other end of the line. Marcus was Sarah’s older stepbrother, a gritty ex-military mechanic who lived his life in the gray areas of the law. They had suffered a falling out when Sarah married David. Marcus had warned her about the family's toxic, controlling nature, but she had been young, in love, and blind.

"Sarah?" Marcus finally said, his tone thick with disbelief. "Are you okay? It's been years."

"I'm not okay, Mark. I left David. I took Zoe."

"Good. It’s about time."

"It's worse than you think," Sarah whispered, her eyes fixed on the bruised face of her sleeping baby. "Eleanor... she hurt Zoe. She slapped her. Hard. I ran, but they have all the money, Mark. They're going to hunt me down and take her. I don't know how to disappear."

The silence returned, but this time it wasn't hesitant; it was lethal. When Marcus spoke again, his voice was ice-cold, stripped of any familial warmth, replaced entirely by a soldier’s tactical focus.

"Where are you?" he asked.

"A motel off I-95, exit 42."

"Get out of there," Marcus ordered. "They'll be running plates by morning. There’s an abandoned diner on Route 9, about twenty miles north of you. The Copper Kettle. Meet me around the back in one hour. Don't stop for gas. Don't look at traffic cameras."

"Okay," Sarah said, ending the call. She gathered her sleeping daughter and stepped out into the humid night.
