Chapter 9: The Perimeter

Three weeks into their isolation, a heavy, unseasonal snowstorm blanketed the mountains, burying the cabin under two feet of snow. The silence of the woods was absolute.
It was 2:00 AM when the subtle, high-pitched chirp of the receiver on the kitchen table broke the quiet.
Marcus was out of his cot in a fraction of a second, a rifle already in his hands. Sarah jolted awake on the sofa, clutching the Glock, her eyes wide with terror.
"Tripwire?" she whispered, her voice trembling.
"Sector four. The main access road," Marcus muttered, staring at the flashing red light on the receiver. Another chirp sounded. "Sector three. They're moving fast on foot. Multiple targets."
"How?" Sarah gasped. "We did everything right."
"Nothing is perfect," Marcus said grimly, tossing her a heavy winter coat. "The Vances must have hired trackers. They found the truck's tire treads before the snow hit, or Silas sold us out. It doesn't matter now. Put Maya in her carrier. Strap her tight."
Sarah moved on pure adrenaline, securing a sleeping Zoe to her chest and pulling her coat over them both.
Suddenly, a blinding white light flooded the cabin windows, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air. The harsh crackle of a megaphone pierced the snowy night.

"Sarah!" David’s voice echoed through the trees, amplified and dripping with condescension. "The game is over, sweetheart. Come outside with my daughter, and maybe my mother won't press kidnapping charges."
Marcus racked the bolt of his rifle. "We go out the back hatch into the root cellar. Into the woods." He looked at her, his eyes fierce. "Do not hesitate, Sarah. If they corner you, you shoot."
