Chapter 3: The Burner

The neon sign of the Starlite Motel flickered aggressively, casting a sickly red glow over the cracked asphalt parking lot. It was cheap, off the main highway, and didn't ask for a credit card if you paid in cash.
Sarah laid Zoe on the faded floral bedspread, carefully wiping the dried blood from beneath the baby's nose with a warm, damp towel. The handprint on Zoe's cheek had darkened into a deep, angry purple bruise. Tears pricked Sarah's eyes, but she forced them back. She couldn't afford to cry.
Leaving Zoe sleeping peacefully in the locked room, Sarah walked across the street to a 24-hour convenience store. She navigated the fluorescent-lit aisles and purchased a cheap, pre-paid burner phone and a state map.
Back in the motel room, she activated the phone. She needed an ally. She couldn't do this alone, not with Eleanor’s resources hunting her. There was only one person she trusted—someone who hated David's family as much as she did, and someone who knew exactly how to stay off the grid.
She dialed a number she hadn't called in four years. It rang three times before a gruff voice answered.
