Chapter 3: The Morning After

Golden morning sunlight streamed through the hospital window blinds.

It painted warm stripes across the sterile white blankets.

Lily opened her eyes slowly, feeling a strange sense of peace.

For the first time in months, she had slept through the entire night.

There were no nightmares about Eleanor's cold, piercing glare.

Sarah was already awake and sitting in the chair beside the bed.

She held a steaming cup of awful hospital coffee, but she looked radiant.

The heavy bags under her mother's eyes seemed a little less dark today.

"Good morning, sleepyhead," Sarah whispered warmly.

"Good morning, Mom," Lily replied, rubbing her tired eyes.

A gentle knock on the door interrupted their quiet moment.

Detective Reynolds walked into the room with a small, empathetic smile.

He held a thin manila folder in his right hand.

"I hope I am not interrupting anything important," Detective Reynolds said.

"Not at all, Detective," Sarah answered while setting down her coffee cup.

"I just wanted to give you both a quick update before you discharge," he explained.

He pulled a pen from his front pocket and clicked it thoughtfully.

"Eleanor Vance has been formally charged and denied bail."

Lily let out a breath she didn't realize she was holding.

"David is also facing charges for his negligence and complicity," he continued.

"Neither of them will be able to come anywhere near you ever again."

Sarah reached over and squeezed Lily's unbandaged hand.

"Thank you so much for believing us," Sarah said with deep gratitude.

"We only did our job, ma'am," Detective Reynolds replied kindly.

"You two were the brave ones who finally stood up and spoke out."

He tipped his head respectfully and quietly exited the sunlit room.

A young nurse bustled in a few minutes later with discharge papers.

She carefully checked the fresh bandages on Lily's injured arm.

"Everything looks like it is healing beautifully," the nurse cheerfully announced.

Sarah signed the necessary forms with a steady, confident hand.

She helped Lily change out of the ugly hospital gown and into comfortable clothes.

Lily pulled on her favorite yellow sweater, feeling like herself again.

They walked together down the long, quiet hospital corridor.

Nobody was chasing them, and nobody was shouting terrible threats.

The automatic glass doors slid open with a soft mechanical swoosh.

A rush of crisp, cool morning air greeted them instantly.

Lily looked up at the bright blue sky.

"Where do we go now?" Lily asked softly.

Sarah smiled and wrapped a protective arm around her daughter's shoulders.

"Anywhere we want, sweetie," Sarah answered brightly.

They stepped off the curb and walked toward the waiting taxi.

The heavy shadow of the Vance family was finally behind them forever.
