Chapter 7: An Open Door

The autumn weeks slipped by in a comfortable, steady rhythm.

Lily and the girl with the pink glasses, Chloe, became fast friends.

They ate lunch together every single day at the edge of the loud cafeteria.

One chilly Tuesday afternoon, Mr. Harrison assigned a partner science project.

He immediately paired Lily and Chloe together to study local plant biology.

Lily felt a sudden, familiar spike of old anxiety in her chest.

In the past, Eleanor had explicitly forbidden any classmates from entering their grand estate.

The old mansion was a strict fortress designed to keep terrible family secrets locked inside.

Chloe turned toward Lily with a bright, enthusiastic grin.

"Do you want to work on the project at my house or yours?" Chloe asked cheerfully.

Lily hesitated for a fleeting moment, her mind racing with lingering fears.

She then remembered the bright white daisies thriving safely in her window box.

"We can go to my apartment," Lily offered with a nervous but genuine smile.

After the final school bell rang, the two girls walked to the small brick building together.

Sarah was standing in the kitchen chopping fresh vegetables for dinner when they arrived.

She quickly wiped her hands on a clean dish towel and smiled warmly at the unexpected guest.

"Mom, this is my friend Chloe from science class," Lily introduced her nervously.

"It is so absolutely wonderful to finally meet you, Chloe," Sarah greeted her with genuine delight.

Sarah immediately offered them a large plate of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies.

They sat down at the small kitchen table with their heavy science textbooks spread out.

Chloe admired the colorful throw pillows and the cozy atmosphere of the living room.

"Your apartment is so amazingly cute and peaceful," Chloe remarked casually while biting into a cookie.

Lily looked over at her mother, who was softly humming a cheerful tune near the stove.

The heavy, oppressive silence of their old life was completely and permanently gone.

It was replaced by the beautiful, ordinary sounds of cooking and quiet, shared laughter.

"Thank you very much," Lily replied, feeling a profound sense of newfound pride.

She realized she did not have to hide her home or her family from the outside world anymore.

The heavy door to her life was finally open, and the bright light was pouring safely inside.
