Chapter 5: Taking Root

Two weeks passed in a quiet, peaceful blur of simple routines.
The small brick apartment finally began to feel like a real home.
Sarah bought a soft blue couch from a friendly neighbor down the hall.
Lily helped her mother arrange colorful throw pillows across the worn cushions.
Saturday morning arrived with bright, cheerful sunshine pouring through the window.
Sarah stood in the kitchen and poured two glasses of cold orange juice.
"Are you ready for our special errand today?" Sarah asked with a smile.
Lily nodded eagerly while finishing her bowl of warm oatmeal.
"We are finally getting the daisies for the window box!" Lily cheered.
They walked together down the bustling, friendly main street of their new town.
Nobody stared at them with judgment or whispered cruel rumors behind their backs.
The local garden center was a vibrant jungle of green leaves and bright petals.
The sweet, earthy smell of wet soil immediately calmed Lily's lingering anxiety.
An older woman in a green apron approached them near the front entrance.
Lily instinctively tensed her shoulders and stepped slightly behind her mother.
The sudden movement was a lingering reflex from her terrifying past with Eleanor.
The store worker simply smiled warmly and pointed toward the back greenhouse.
"The daisies are right over there, sweetie," the kind woman said softly.
Lily relaxed her tense shoulders and offered a small, shy smile in return.
She carefully selected three healthy pots of bright white daisies with yellow centers.
Sarah paid the cashier and let Lily carry the flowers in a brown paper bag.
They returned to the apartment and opened the living room window wide.
The cool afternoon breeze ruffled Lily's hair as she scooped dirt into the wooden box.
She gently placed each daisy plant into the rich, dark soil.
Sarah handed her a small green watering can filled with fresh tap water.
"They look incredibly happy up here," Lily observed quietly.
"They just needed a safe place to grow," Sarah replied with deep meaning.
Lily leaned her chin on her hands and admired their hard work.
The white petals practically glowed against the old red bricks of the building.
For the first time in her life, Lily felt truly rooted in one solid place.

She knew the healing process would take a long time and plenty of patience.
However, looking at the resilient little flowers, she felt entirely ready to bloom.
