Chapter 12 - Bluebird.

The word meant nothing to Daniel.
It meant everything to Detective Ortiz.
She asked Sophie to repeat it.
“Bluebird.”
Ortiz looked at Daniel.
“Northstar’s server records contain an encrypted folder with that name.”
Daniel stared at her.
“How do you know?”
“We recovered a directory map during the investigation, but no one could open the folder.”
Sophie looked confused.
“Mom said I should remember it if she forgot to come home.”
The sentence broke Daniel’s heart in a way he could not show.
Claire had understood the danger.
She had left clues in places only the people she loved would recognize.
Ortiz contacted the digital forensics team.
They tried BLUEBIRD as a password.
It failed.
They tried variations using Claire’s birthday, Sophie’s birthday, and the date of Claire’s death.
Nothing worked.
Daniel thought about Claire’s habits.
She never used obvious passwords.
She turned family memories into phrases.
Bluebird had to point to something else.
Sophie suddenly ran upstairs.
Daniel followed.
She opened a drawer beside her bed and pulled out an old children’s book.
The Bluebird’s Garden.
Claire had read it to Sophie almost every night.
Sophie opened the cover.
Inside, Claire had written a dedication.
FOR SOPHIE, WHO ALWAYS FINDS THE WAY HOME.
Below the sentence was a string of tiny numbers Daniel had assumed were an old library code.
Ortiz photographed them and sent them to forensics.
The reply came five minutes later.
The folder opened.
Inside were copies of Northstar’s complete financial ledgers, emails between Mason and Paul, and a video file labeled 11_18_PM.
Daniel recognized the time.
It was when Claire had called Caroline after leaving the warehouse.
Ortiz played the file.
The video came from Claire’s dashboard camera.
Claire was driving.
She looked frightened but alert.
Her phone rang through the car speakers.
Mason’s voice came through.
“Pull over, Claire.”
“No.”
“You are making this worse.”
“I’m taking everything to Daniel.”
Mason’s voice sharpened.
“You do that, and the company collapses.”
“Then it collapses.”
Claire looked into the rearview mirror.
A pair of headlights followed closely behind her.
Mason said, “You are not thinking about Sophie.”
Claire replied, “Sophie is exactly why I’m doing this.”
The video shook as Claire changed lanes.
Then she said something Daniel had never heard before.
“I already gave the original ledger to someone you can’t reach.”
The recording cut off.
Ortiz paused the screen.
Daniel looked at her.
“Who?”
Ortiz shook her head.
“No clue.”
Caroline spoke from behind them.
“I might know.”
Everyone turned.
Caroline looked toward Mrs. Alvarez.
Claire had trusted the housekeeper for years.
Mrs. Alvarez’s face became very still.
Daniel understood before she spoke.
“I promised Mrs. Claire I would never open it unless someone came for Sophie.”
Mrs. Alvarez walked to the kitchen pantry and removed an old blue cookie tin from the top shelf.
Inside was a sealed envelope marked ORIGINAL LEDGER.
Daniel stared at her.
“You had this for two years?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because Mrs. Claire said the person who caused trouble would eventually come looking for the child.”
Mrs. Alvarez looked at Caroline.

“This morning, someone finally did.”
