Chapter 8 - The Key With No Label.

Daniel spent three hours at the police station before Detective Ortiz returned to the interview room.

She placed a cup of coffee in front of him and closed the door.

“The arrest has been placed on hold pending review.”

Daniel looked up.

“Why?”

“Because the signature expert we use for priority financial cases found inconsistencies in two of the approval documents.”

Daniel exhaled slowly.

It was not freedom.

It was room to fight.

Ortiz sat across from him.

“Now tell me everything you did not tell me at the house.”

Daniel described the bank box, the photograph, Claire’s written statement, and the flash drive.

He also described Sophie’s silver key.

Ortiz asked where the bank materials were.

“With someone I trust.”

“Who?”

Daniel hesitated again.

“Mrs. Alvarez.”

Ortiz nodded.

“Good choice.”

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

“You know her?”

“No.”

“I know Mason Keene had your mother, your lawyer, and your company inside his circle.”

“If Mrs. Alvarez has stayed outside that circle, she may be safer than anyone else.”

Ortiz made a call and arranged for two plainclothes investigators to retrieve the evidence from the house.

Then Daniel showed her the silver key Sophie had handed him before he left.

There was no number engraved on it.

Only a tiny crescent-shaped mark.

Ortiz photographed it.

“Does that symbol mean anything to you?”

Daniel shook his head.

Ortiz searched a database, then frowned.

“It resembles a key used for private document lockers at Crescent Storage.”

Daniel knew the name.

Crescent Storage operated a climate-controlled archive facility near Mercer Development’s old headquarters.

Claire had once kept architectural plans there.

Ortiz called a judge and requested emergency access based on the evidence already collected.

By early evening, Daniel and Ortiz were standing inside a narrow archive corridor lined with steel doors.

The key opened Locker C-14.

Inside were three cardboard file boxes and one black garment bag.

Daniel opened the first box.

It contained copies of trust records with handwritten notes in Claire’s writing.

The second contained printed emails between Mason and Paul.

The third contained something stranger.

Dozens of photographs of Daniel’s house.

The office windows.

Sophie’s school entrance.

Daniel’s car.

Caroline meeting Paul outside a restaurant.

Some photographs were dated before Claire died.

Others were from the previous month.

Daniel felt the back of his neck go cold.

Ortiz examined the images without speaking.

“This is surveillance.”

Daniel looked at the garment bag.

He unzipped it.

Inside was Claire’s dark green raincoat.

He had not seen it since the night she died.

The police had told him none of her personal belongings had been recovered from the car except her wedding ring.

Daniel touched the sleeve.

A small tear ran along the cuff.

Pinned inside the lining was a folded receipt.

Northstar Warehouse.

10:42 P.M.

The night before Claire died.

Daniel turned toward Ortiz.

She was staring at something beneath the coat.

A disposable phone lay at the bottom of the bag.

Ortiz powered it on.

There was one saved voicemail.

The caller was Caroline Mercer.

Her voice trembled through the speaker.

“Claire, don’t go to the warehouse alone.”

“Mason knows you copied the files.”

“Please call me back.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

For the first time, the evidence suggested that Caroline had once tried to save Claire.

Then the voicemail ended.

A second audio file appeared beneath it.

It had been recorded fourteen minutes later.

A man’s voice said, “She’s already here.”

The voice belonged to Paul Vance.
