Chapter 9 - Caroline's First Lie.

Daniel returned home after dark with Detective Ortiz.
The bright office from that morning now looked unfamiliar under the warm lamps.
Caroline sat exactly where he had left her.
Sophie was asleep upstairs.
Mrs. Alvarez had refused to let anyone move her.
Mason was gone.
So was his silver sedan.
Daniel placed Claire’s raincoat on the desk.
Caroline stared at it and covered her mouth.
“Where did you find that?”
“Crescent Storage.”
Caroline looked toward Ortiz.
Daniel continued.
“We heard your voicemail.”
Caroline closed her eyes.
“I tried to stop her.”
“Then tell me why you spent two years pretending you knew nothing.”
Caroline’s shoulders dropped.
“Because I was a coward.”
Daniel expected another excuse.
She did not give one.
She told him that Claire had confronted her about Northstar first because Caroline managed the family trust records.
Caroline had not created the shell company.
She had discovered it months earlier and confronted Paul.
Paul told her the transfers were part of a temporary tax strategy authorized by Mason and Daniel.
Caroline believed him because Paul had represented the family for nearly twenty years.
Then Claire found the forged signatures.
The night before Claire died, Caroline realized Paul had lied.
She called Claire and warned her not to meet Mason.
Claire went anyway.
Daniel’s voice became hard.
“What happened at the warehouse?”
“I don’t know.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“I know she left alive.”
Daniel stared at her.
“How?”
“Because she called me at 11:18.”
Caroline began to cry quietly.
“She said she had enough evidence.”
“She said she was going home to tell you everything.”
Daniel could barely speak.
“She never came home.”
“No.”
Caroline said Paul arrived at her house the next morning before the police notified Daniel of the crash.
That detail silenced the room.
Paul already knew Claire was dead.
He told Caroline the accident would trigger an audit if Claire’s accusations became public.
He claimed Daniel could be prosecuted because the fraudulent approvals carried Daniel’s signature.
Caroline panicked.
She agreed to keep quiet while Paul and Mason “corrected” the trust records.
Instead, the fraud continued.
“Why the false passport?” Ortiz asked.
Caroline looked ashamed.
“Paul called me yesterday.”
“He said federal investigators were closing in.”
“He said they planned to arrest Daniel and freeze the family accounts.”
“He told me Sophie would be placed with strangers.”
“So you decided to disappear with her?” Daniel said.
“I decided I would get her somewhere safe until you were cleared.”
“You did not ask me.”
“I thought you would refuse.”
“I would have.”
Caroline nodded.
“I know.”
Daniel picked up the forged guardianship document.
“And Paul prepared this?”
“Yes.”
Ortiz asked for Caroline’s phone.
Caroline handed it over.
The most recent call from Paul had been deleted.
Ortiz recovered the metadata anyway.
The call lasted nine minutes.
It came from a number registered to a hotel near the airport.
Daniel looked at Ortiz.
“Mason has disappeared.”
Ortiz was already dialing.
Before she could speak, Caroline whispered, “He won’t leave without the flash drive.”
Daniel turned.
“How does he know about it?”
Caroline stared at him.
“I never told him.”
A floorboard creaked above them.
Daniel looked toward the ceiling.
Sophie was supposed to be asleep.
Then Mrs. Alvarez shouted from the upstairs hallway.
“Mr. Mercer!”
Daniel ran.
Sophie’s bedroom window was open.
On the pillow lay Daniel’s old phone, the one he had left powered down.
Its screen displayed a live message.
