Chapter 7 - The Warrant.

Detective Lena Ortiz arrived eleven minutes later with two officers.

Daniel did not run.

He did not hide the documents.

He met them in the foyer with his hands visible and asked one question.

“What am I accused of?”

Ortiz studied him before answering.

“Financial fraud, falsification of trust records, and unlawful transfer of protected assets.”

Daniel almost laughed because the accusations were so perfectly designed.

Every crime Claire had connected to Mason and Paul had been placed under Daniel’s name.

Ortiz produced copies of transfer approvals.

Daniel recognized his signature.

It was the same careful imitation used on the guardianship form.

“These are forged.”

Ortiz did not react.

“That is something your attorney can address.”

“My attorney is Paul Vance.”

At that name, Ortiz’s eyes changed slightly.

Daniel noticed.

“So you know him?”

“I know the name.”

Behind Daniel, Mason stepped into the foyer.

“Detective, I’m Mason Keene, CFO of Mercer Development.”

Ortiz looked at him.

“I know who you are.”

Mason smiled politely.

“I’m happy to cooperate.”

Daniel wanted to warn her, but doing so in front of Mason would reveal how much evidence he had.

Instead, he asked Ortiz for a private conversation.

She refused until the officers completed a quick safety check of the house.

During those minutes, Caroline stood near the staircase as if she had aged ten years.

Sophie watched from above with Mrs. Alvarez.

Daniel hated that his daughter was seeing any of it.

When Ortiz finally allowed him into the dining room, Daniel told her about Claire’s recording.

He did not mention the bank box.

Not yet.

He did not know whether the investigation itself had been compromised.

Ortiz listened without interruption.

Then she asked, “Where is the recording now?”

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation told her something.

She leaned closer.

“Mr. Mercer, if you think someone inside the legal process is involved, say so.”

Daniel looked through the glass doors toward the foyer.

Mason was watching them.

“My family attorney notarized a false guardianship document.”

Ortiz’s expression hardened.

“Paul Vance?”

“Yes.”

She closed her notebook.

“Do not say another word in this house.”

Daniel stared at her.

Ortiz spoke more quietly.

“We have been looking at Northstar for six months.”

Daniel felt a jolt of hope.

Then she added, “But your name is on every major document.”

The hope disappeared.

Ortiz explained that the warrant required Daniel to come with them for formal processing and questioning.

She could not cancel it simply because he claimed the records were forged.

Daniel understood.

Before leaving, he hugged Sophie.

She was trying not to cry.

“Are you coming back?”

“Yes.”

“You promised nobody would take me.”

“I remember.”

Caroline stepped forward.

Daniel blocked her with a look.

“You do not leave this house with Sophie.”

Caroline nodded.

“I won’t.”

Mason stood near the door.

“I’ll make sure everything here is handled.”

Daniel turned toward him.

“No.”

The single word stopped everyone.

“You leave my house now.”

Mason’s smile disappeared.

Ortiz watched the exchange carefully.

Daniel was escorted outside.

As he reached the police car, Sophie suddenly ran onto the front steps holding something in her hand.

“Dad!”

Mrs. Alvarez hurried after her.

Sophie held up a tiny silver key.

“I found this in Grandma’s bag too.”

Caroline appeared in the doorway.

Her expression changed when she saw the key.

Mason saw it as well.
