Chapter 1 - The Ash and The Echo.

.The dining room fell into a suffocating silence.

The crystal chandelier above seemed to flicker,

casting harsh shadows across the half-eaten feast.

Four-year-old Nino Hale stood beside the black grand piano with both fists clenched at his sides.

His curly brown hair was damp with tears, and his navy sweater had twisted crookedly around one shoulder from ten furious minutes of kicking and struggling.

Victor Hale watched him from across the penthouse, rigid in a sharp gray three-piece suit, a crystal whiskey glass balanced in one hand.

"Nino!"

The single word cracked through the room like a judge's gavel.

Nino stomped harder.

"No!"

Victor's jaw tightened.

"Enough."

The boy's crying only grew more desperate.

Elena Brooks stepped out from beside the dining table before Victor could call security, the housekeeper, or anyone else he normally summoned when emotion became inconvenient.

Her blonde hair was pinned in a neat bun, and the gray uniform dress Victor required of his household staff made her look almost severe until she knelt on the polished floor.

She did not touch Nino.

She did not tell him to stop.

She simply lowered herself to his eye level.

"You look angry," Elena said softly.

Nino stared at her through wet lashes.

"And sad too."

The room changed.

The tantrum did not vanish like magic, but the boy's shoulders dropped as if someone had finally removed a weight no adult had bothered to notice.

Victor's fingers tightened around the whiskey glass.

He had hired six nannies in eight months.

Three had quit.

Two had been fired.

One had left the penthouse in tears after Nino bit her arm.

Elena had been there eleven days.

Victor had expected her to fail by the end of the week.

Instead, Nino took one trembling step toward her.

Then another.

Without warning, he threw both arms around Elena's neck.

She caught him gently.

Nino pressed a clumsy kiss to her cheek.

Victor stopped breathing.

His son had not hugged him since the night Claire died.

He had not hugged Victor's mother.

He had not hugged his pediatric therapist.

He barely tolerated being touched by anyone.

Yet now he clung to a woman who had been a stranger less than two weeks earlier.

The whiskey glass slipped from Victor's hand.

It fell in a slow sparkling arc.

Then it shattered across the white marble floor.

Nino flinched and buried his face against Elena's shoulder.

Victor stared at the broken crystal.

For one impossible second, he saw another glass breaking on another night.

Claire's hand shaking.

Claire whispering his name.

Claire asking him not to leave for London.

He crushed the memory before it could fully surface.

"Get him upstairs," Victor said.

Elena looked at him carefully.

"He needs a few minutes first."

Victor's eyes hardened.

"That was not a request."

Nino's small arms tightened around her.

Elena rose with the boy against her chest.

As she turned toward the hallway, something silver slid from Nino's pocket and landed beside the shattered glass.

Victor bent down.

It was an old digital voice recorder.

One he recognized immediately.

It had belonged to Claire.

He pressed the only button that still worked.

Static filled the room.

May you like

Then his dead wife's voice whispered from the speaker.

"If Victor is hearing this, then someone finally told him the truth."
