Chapter 14 - The Grandmother's Last Bargain.

Victor moved instinctively between Beatrice and Nino.
Elena pulled the boy behind her.
Beatrice's hand trembled around the gun.
"Put it down," Victor said.
"I came to protect you."
"With a weapon?"
"Caleb is in the building."
Victor stared at her.
"How do you know?"
"Because he called me."
Beatrice admitted what she had spent nine months denying.
She had arranged the illegal fertility substitution.
She had threatened Claire.
She had paid Miles to conceal records.
She had used Crowe to frighten witnesses.
But she insisted she never ordered Claire's death.
"I wanted an heir," Beatrice said.
"I wanted this family protected."
Victor's face twisted with disgust.
"You violated my wife to protect a family?"
Beatrice's eyes filled.
"I thought blood was the only thing that kept power from being stolen."
Victor looked at Nino.
"He is not my blood."
Beatrice lowered her gaze.
"I know."
"Is he my son?"
She hesitated.
Victor's voice sharpened.
"Answer me."
Beatrice looked at the terrified child.
"Yes."
The answer broke something inside Victor that had been clenched for months.
"Then why did you make him afraid of you?"
Beatrice began to cry.
"Because after Claire died, every time I looked at him, I saw what I had done."
A metallic sound came from the service hallway.
Beatrice raised the gun.
Victor grabbed her wrist just as a shot exploded through the door.
Glass shattered from a framed painting.
Elena dropped to the floor with Nino beneath her.
Caleb Crowe entered holding a suppressed pistol.
Victor tackled Beatrice behind the kitchen island.
Caleb fired again.
The bullet struck the whiskey decanter.
Crystal and amber liquor sprayed across the marble.
For one surreal second, Victor remembered the first glass shattering at Nino's tantrum.
Back then, he had believed the broken object was the crisis.
Now he understood the crisis had been his blindness.
Beatrice fired toward Caleb and missed.
Elena crawled with Nino toward the pantry.
Caleb saw them.
He changed direction.
Victor lunged across the floor and caught his ankle.
Caleb kicked him in the face.
Victor held on.
"Run!"
Elena reached the panic room door.
Nino slipped from her hand.
"Daddy!"
He ran back.
Victor's horror was immediate.
Caleb grabbed Nino by the sweater.
Everything stopped.
"Let him go," Victor said.
Caleb pressed the pistol against the boy's side.
"Give me the safe-deposit drive."
Victor slowly reached into his jacket.
Beatrice whispered, "Don't."
Victor ignored her.
He tossed the drive across the floor.
Caleb shoved Nino away and bent for it.
That was his mistake.
Elena pulled Nino clear.
Beatrice fired once.
Caleb fell.
Police stormed the penthouse seconds later.
Detective Ortiz took the gun from Beatrice's hand.
Victor crawled toward Nino.
The boy was shaking.
Victor stopped a few feet away.
He remembered Elena's lesson.
Do not force.
Do not command.
"Can I hold you?" Victor asked.
Nino looked at Elena.
Then back at his father.
He took one step.
Then another.
And for the first time since Claire died, Nino climbed into Victor's arms.
Victor held him and wept.
Over Nino's shoulder, Beatrice was handcuffed.
Before Ortiz led her away, she looked at Victor.
"There is one more truth on Claire's drive."
Victor stared at her.
May you like
Beatrice's voice broke.
"It is about Elena."
