Chapter 9 - The Son Victor Chose Without Knowing.

Victor stopped the recording.
He could not feel his hands.
Across the room, Nino laughed softly when his block tower fell.
The sound made the revelation crueler.
"Play it again," Victor said.
Elena did.
Claire's words did not change.
"If Victor learns Nino isn't his biological son, Beatrice will destroy all of us."
Victor walked to the windows.
Four years of memories attacked him at once.
Nino asleep on his chest as a newborn.
Nino taking his first steps toward the grand piano.
Nino shouting "Daddy" from the bath.
Then nine months of distance after Claire died.
Victor had told himself the boy's rejection was grief.
Now another poisonous thought entered.
Had Nino somehow sensed Victor was not his father?
Elena seemed to read his expression.
"Do not do that."
Victor turned.
"Do what?"
"Reduce four years of being his father to a laboratory result you have not even seen."
Victor's eyes flashed.
"You knew?"
"No."
"Claire told you nothing?"
"Nothing about paternity."
Victor looked at Nino again.
The boy noticed his stare and stopped playing.
"Daddy mad?"
Victor could not answer.
That hesitation was enough.
Nino's face collapsed.
He ran to Elena.
Victor hated himself before Elena said a word.
Detective Ortiz interrupted.
"There is another thirty seconds on the recording."
Claire's voice returned.
"Victor deserves the truth, but not like this."
Crowe answered.
"Truth does not matter to Beatrice. Blood does."
"Victor loves him."
"Beatrice loves the trust."
The recording ended.
Victor understood the financial trap immediately.
The Hale family trust required a direct biological descendant for certain controlling shares to pass automatically.
If Nino was not Victor's biological son, Beatrice could challenge his inheritance.
If Victor knew and concealed it, the board could accuse him of securities fraud connected to succession disclosures.
Claire had been protecting Nino and Victor at the same time.
"Who is the biological father?" Victor asked.
No one knew.
Then Elena remembered the safe-deposit key.
They went to the Park Avenue bank under police escort.
Box 417 contained three items.
A sealed DNA report.
A flash drive.
And a letter addressed to Nino.
Victor opened the DNA report first.
His name appeared beside the words "probability of paternity."
The number was 0.00 percent.
Victor sat down.
He did not cry.
That almost made it worse.
Elena reached toward him, then stopped herself.
"There is another page," she said.
Victor turned it.
A second comparison had been performed.
The listed man was Daniel Mercer.
Victor knew the name.
Daniel had been Claire's college boyfriend.
He had died five years earlier in a boating accident.
But the probability listed beside Daniel's name was also 0.00 percent.
Victor looked confused.
Elena took the report.
At the bottom was a third result, partly hidden by the fold.
The biological match belonged to someone else.
Someone whose name made Victor stand so fast the chair struck the wall.
"That is impossible."
The name was Miles Arden.
Victor had always believed paternity was one of the few facts in life that did not require interpretation.
The report destroyed that comfort in less than a page.

He wanted to be angry at Claire, then hated himself for wanting the easiest target.
Elena watched him struggle and understood that the next choice he made could either confirm Nino's deepest fear or begin repairing it.
