Chapter 11 - The Confession That Didn't Fit.

Victor demanded Miles's location.

Miles refused.

"Listen first."

Victor put the call on speaker while Detective Ortiz traced it.

Miles said he had gone to the penthouse the night Claire died because she threatened to expose the fertility fraud.

He admitted bringing digoxin.

He admitted putting it into the red cup.

He admitted watching Claire drink.

The confession was clean, direct, and horrifying.

It was also wrong.

Elena noticed first.

"Claire did not drink from the cup that night," she said.

Miles went silent.

Victor looked at her.

Elena pointed to Claire's video.

"She recorded herself after the time he claims she drank it."

Detective Ortiz checked the metadata.

Elena was right.

Claire had filmed the video at 11:42 p.m.

Miles claimed she drank the poisoned water at 10:15.

The toxicology report estimated the fatal dose entered her system after midnight.

"You are lying," Victor said.

Miles began breathing rapidly.

"No."

"Who are you protecting?"

The line went dead.

Ortiz's trace located the call near an abandoned Hale Meridian warehouse in Queens.

Police raced there.

Victor insisted on following despite Ortiz's warning.

They found Miles in an upstairs office with blood on his shirt and a gun on the floor.

He was alive but badly injured.

Beside him lay Vincent Crowe, unconscious from a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

Miles grabbed Victor's sleeve.

"Your mother sent him."

Victor looked at Crowe.

"To kill you?"

Miles nodded.

"Because I was going to tell you the rest."

"Then tell me now."

Miles coughed.

"The digoxin was meant to scare Claire."

Victor recoiled.

"You poisoned her to scare her?"

"I put a small dose in the cup."

"You are insane."

"I know."

Miles wept openly.

"But she never drank it."

He said Claire saw him near the cup and became suspicious.

She hid it beneath the piano.

Later, someone else gave her a sedative mixed into tea.

The combination found in Claire's blood included both compounds because trace digoxin transferred to her fingers when she handled the cup, but the lethal agent had been something different.

The original toxicology review had missed it because Beatrice pushed for a limited autopsy.

Detective Ortiz leaned closer.

"What killed Claire?"

Miles whispered, "Potassium chloride."

Victor felt cold.

A large enough dose could cause fatal cardiac arrest and disappear quickly from evidence.

"Who injected her?"

Miles looked toward the doorway.

A figure stood there.

Elena had followed Victor from the penthouse after receiving a message from an unknown number.

Miles stared at her in terror.

"Her mother."

Elena stopped breathing.

"My mother died six years ago."

Miles shook his head.

"No, Elena."

His voice broke.

"Marisol Brooks is alive."

At the warehouse, Victor saw how thoroughly the old Hale machinery had been built to protect itself.

False invoices, burner phones, and shell consulting agreements tied Crowe to jobs that never appeared on company books.

Miles had signed many of them.

Beatrice had approved none on paper, which meant either she was innocent of the operational details or far more careful than everyone around her.
