Chapter 10 - The Bride Takes the Microphone.

Lauren walked back into the ballroom holding Richard's agreement in one hand and the skirt of her wedding dress in the other.
The guests immediately quieted.
Claire followed several steps behind her.
Richard came last.
For once, he was not leading the room.
Lauren stopped beside the stage.
Evan met her there.
He searched her face.
"You okay?"
Lauren shook her head.
"No."
Then she added, "But I know what I want to say."
Evan nodded and handed her the microphone.
Richard stepped forward.
"Lauren, think carefully."
She turned toward him.
"That's exactly what I'm doing."
Claire felt the room tighten again.
Lauren climbed onto the stage and faced the guests.
Her wedding veil shimmered under the chandeliers.
For a moment she looked at the place cards, flowers, candles, and expensive details she had spent a year planning.
Then she looked at Claire.
"I need to say something before this reception continues."
No one moved.
"My sister did not ruin my wedding tonight."
Claire's eyes filled again.
Lauren continued.
"She came here to support me."
"She helped me for months."
"She gave a toast that was kinder than I deserved after I spent years telling her to just keep the peace."
Richard looked toward Evan.
Evan did not intervene.
Lauren unfolded the agreement.
"Our father planned to tell Claire that her college money was gone."
"Then he planned to offer the money back if she gave up her new job and publicly called tonight a misunderstanding."
A wave of whispers moved through the room.
Richard's face went rigid.
"Lauren."
She kept speaking.
"I also learned tonight that money Claire believed was reserved for her education was used for this reception."
Several guests looked around at the chandeliers and flowers.
Lauren's voice trembled.
"I did not know that."
"If I had known, I would never have accepted it."
Claire looked down.
She had been angry at Lauren for staying silent earlier.
Now her sister was standing in front of everyone and doing the one thing Richard feared most.
She was telling the truth without asking permission.
Lauren turned toward Claire.
"I'm sorry."
Claire shook her head slightly.
"You didn't know."
Lauren's expression tightened.
"I knew enough about Dad to ask more questions."
The admission hurt because it was honest.
Richard climbed one step toward the stage.
"This has gone far enough."
Lauren looked at him.
"No."
Again, that small word stopped him.
"It went far enough six years ago when you hid my fellowship."
A few guests gasped softly.
Lauren held the microphone with both hands now.
"You decided my career for me."
"You tried to decide Claire's career too."
"And tonight you tried to make her look helpless because you didn't know she had already built a life outside your control."
Richard's face reddened.
"I am your father."
Lauren's voice softened.
"Then you should have trusted us enough to let us fail honestly."
The room went still.
Claire had never heard anyone describe the problem so simply.
Richard had always claimed that he prevented failure.
But he also prevented choice.
Lauren handed the agreement to Evan.
"I want copies of this."
Richard stared at her.
"Why?"
Lauren's answer was immediate.
"Because tomorrow you will say tonight happened differently."
Richard's face changed.
Martin, still standing near the head table, looked down as if the sentence had confirmed something he already knew.
Then one of the Bennett Holdings executives rose from his table.
His name was Daniel Mercer, the company's chief operating officer.
He looked directly at Richard.
"We need to talk about the liquidity issue Martin mentioned."
Richard froze.
Claire watched him.
May you like
The family confrontation had just crossed into his company.
And suddenly Richard was the one standing in a room full of people waiting for answers.
