Chapter 5 - The Letter in the Black Clutch.

Claire returned to the stage without asking anyone's permission.
The microphone was still resting beside her folded degree confirmation.
She picked it up slowly.
Richard followed her with his eyes.
"Claire, don't."
She almost laughed at the request.
For years, he had told her not to be emotional, not to embarrass the family, not to challenge him in public, and not to confuse independence with ingratitude.
Now he wanted privacy because privacy protected him.
Claire looked at the guests.
"I'm sorry this happened during Lauren's wedding."
Lauren shook her head.
"Don't apologize to me."
Claire paused.
That was the first time all night her sister had sounded certain.
She continued.
"Three weeks ago, I finished my degree."
A few guests nodded.
"I didn't tell my father because I wanted tonight to belong to my sister."
Richard looked away.
"Apparently, that plan didn't work."
A nervous ripple of laughter moved through the room.
It was not mocking.
It was relief that someone had finally said something human.
Claire set the microphone down for a moment and opened her black clutch.
She removed the ivory Calder Biotech envelope.
Richard's face tightened before she even unfolded it.
Lauren noticed.
"You know what's in that letter, don't you?"
Richard ignored her.
Claire opened the page.
The letter was only two pages long, but she had read it so many times she could have recited every sentence.
Calder Biotech had offered her a position in its molecular research division.
The salary was more than she had expected.
The relocation support was generous.
The start date was the following Monday.
Most importantly, the offer had nothing to do with Richard Bennett.
Claire had earned it through a research project, a national student competition, and three interviews conducted without one family introduction.
She lifted the microphone again.
"Calder Biotech hired me."
The sentence moved through the ballroom with a different kind of silence.
Richard closed his eyes briefly.
Someone near the back began applauding.
This time the clapping did not stop.
A professor from Claire's university stood first.
Then one of Lauren's college friends joined in.
Then Evan.
Within seconds, more than half the room was on its feet.
Claire did not smile.
She looked at Richard.
His face was controlled, but his hands were clenched at his sides.
When the applause faded, he spoke quietly.
"You have no idea what company you're joining."
Claire's pride cooled.
"What does that mean?"
Richard looked toward Martin.
Martin gave a tiny shake of his head.
Richard ignored him.
"Calder is not hiring you because you're special."
Claire felt the old reflexive wound open.
Richard had always been talented at finding the one sentence that made an achievement feel smaller.
"Then why are they hiring me?"
Richard's gaze hardened.
"Because of me."
Claire stared at him.
"No."
"Their CEO has been trying to get access to Bennett research for years."
"My work isn't Bennett research."
"Your last name is Bennett."
"My research belongs to the university lab."
Richard stepped closer to the stage.
"You think that matters to them?"
Claire wanted to dismiss him.
Then she remembered Professor Ellis's reference request being routed through the family office.
She remembered Martin's warning.
She remembered the strange delay between her final interview and the offer.
A cold thought entered her mind.
"Did you contact Calder?"
Richard did not answer.
Claire's voice sharpened.
"Did you call them about me?"
Martin spoke from behind him.
"He did."
Richard turned.
May you like
Martin looked at Claire.
"And what he told them is the reason I finally decided I couldn't stay silent."
