Chapter 13 - Twenty-Three Minutes.

Claire stood beneath the chandeliers with her phone in one hand and her mother's letter in the other.

Twenty-three minutes should not have felt like enough time to change a life.

Yet the truth was that her life had been changing for years.

This was only the first time she was being allowed to see the decision clearly.

Richard looked at the phone.

"Boston is three states away."

Claire almost smiled.

It was such an ordinary sentence after everything else.

"I know where Boston is."

"You have no apartment."

"Calder offered temporary housing."

Richard's eyes narrowed.

"They did that tonight?"

"They did it because they expected you to cut me off."

That landed harder than Claire intended.

Richard's face tightened.

"So now strangers know our family business."

Claire looked at him.

"They know because you called them first."

Richard opened his mouth and stopped.

Lauren came closer.

"Take the job."

Claire turned toward her.

The bride's makeup was still perfect from a distance, but up close Claire could see where tears had gathered along her lower lashes.

"Are you sure?"

Lauren let out a shaky laugh.

"I'm wearing a wedding dress paid for with your education money."

"I think I lost the right to tell you to stay close."

Claire shook her head.

"You didn't know."

"I know."

Lauren squeezed her hand.

"But now I do."

Claire looked toward Evan.

He nodded.

"Your sister and I can handle the rest of tonight."

Richard stepped forward.

"Claire, don't make a permanent choice because you're angry."

Claire stared at him.

The sentence sounded almost reasonable.

That was what made it dangerous.

Richard had always hidden control inside advice that sounded sensible.

She looked at her mother's note again.

Help her when she asks.

When she doesn't ask, trust her.

Claire unlocked her phone.

Richard watched every movement.

She opened the Calder email.

The confirmation link waited at the bottom.

Her thumb hovered over it.

For one second, she felt fourteen again.

She wanted her father to tell her she was making the right choice.

She wanted her mother beside her.

She wanted Lauren to be six years younger and still dreaming about New York.

She wanted a family that had never turned love into leverage.

None of those things were available.

But the decision was.

Claire pressed CONFIRM.

A new page loaded.

WELCOME TO CALDER BIOTECH.

Her breath left her slowly.

Lauren wrapped both arms around her.

The applause that rose this time was quieter than before.

It felt less like a performance and more like permission to begin.

Richard did not clap.

Claire had not expected him to.

Daniel Mercer approached Martin near the head table and spoke in a low voice.

Several Bennett executives moved toward them.

Richard noticed.

His attention shifted instantly.

Claire saw the old instinct return.

The company.

The reputation.

The numbers.

He turned toward Daniel.

"We will discuss this tomorrow."

Daniel shook his head.

"The board is convening a special call tonight."

Richard stared at him.

"On whose authority?"

"Mine and two independent directors."

The answer changed the air again.

Richard's phone began vibrating.

Then vibrating again.

He looked down at the screen.

Claire could not see the messages, but she saw his expression.

For the first time, other people were making decisions without waiting for his approval.

Richard looked at his daughters.

"This is what you wanted?"

Claire shook her head.

"No."

She folded her mother's letter carefully.

"I wanted you to stop deciding what everyone else was allowed to want."

Richard stared at her for a long moment.

Then he walked away from the stage and disappeared through the ballroom doors.

Lauren watched him go.

"Do you think he'll come back?"

Claire looked at the clock.

Midnight was approaching.

"I don't know."

But five minutes later, Martin received a message that made his expression change.

He walked quickly toward Claire.

"Richard isn't coming back."

Claire frowned.

"How do you know?"

Martin held up his phone.

May you like

"Because he just tried to move the remaining family accounts."

And someone had finally stopped him.
