Chapter 14 - The Last Account.

The board call began while half the wedding guests were still seated beneath the chandeliers.

Daniel Mercer left the ballroom with two executives and joined from a private conference room upstairs.

Martin stayed near Claire and Lauren.

He was no longer employed by Bennett Holdings, but his knowledge had become impossible to ignore.

"What does it mean that they stopped the transfer?" Claire asked.

Martin chose his words carefully.

"It means the bank flagged unusual movement after the company placed a temporary hold on certain authority levels."

Lauren looked alarmed.

"Is Dad in trouble?"

Martin exhaled.

"The board is going to review what happened."

"That's all I can responsibly say right now."

Claire appreciated the answer.

For the first time all evening, someone admitted where certainty ended.

Lauren sat at the edge of the stage and removed her heels.

The gesture was so ordinary that Claire almost laughed.

"I spent fourteen months planning this wedding," Lauren said.

"I thought the worst thing that could happen was rain."

Claire sat beside her.

"Technically, it didn't rain."

Lauren looked at her.

Then both sisters laughed.

It was exhausted laughter.

But it was real.

Evan returned with two glasses of water.

"The caterer wants to know if dessert is still happening."

Lauren looked across the ballroom.

Guests were talking in small groups now.

Some were leaving quietly.

Others were waiting, unsure whether the reception had ended or simply changed into something no planner could have scheduled.

Lauren took the water.

"Serve the cake."

Evan blinked.

"Really?"

"Yes."

She looked at Claire.

"Dad already took enough from tonight."

Claire understood.

Continuing the wedding would not erase what happened.

It would stop Richard from owning the final memory too.

The band returned cautiously.

Lauren asked them for something soft.

The room slowly restarted.

Not normally.

But honestly.

Claire was halfway through a slice of cake when Richard returned.

He stood in the ballroom entrance without his tuxedo jacket.

His bow tie was loose.

For the first time in Claire's memory, he looked like a man who had run out of prepared statements.

Conversation faded around him.

He walked toward his daughters.

Lauren stood.

Claire remained seated.

Richard stopped several feet away.

"The board suspended my financial authority pending review."

Lauren lowered her eyes.

Claire said nothing.

Richard looked at her.

"Are you happy?"

Claire felt the question reach for guilt.

She recognized it now.

"No."

Richard seemed surprised.

"I'm not happy that any of this happened."

"I'm relieved it stopped."

He looked away.

"I built Bennett Holdings from almost nothing."

"I know."

"I kept you both safe."

Lauren answered quietly.

"Sometimes."

Richard looked at her.

Lauren continued.

"And sometimes you kept us small because small felt safer to you."

Richard's eyes filled, though no tears fell.

Claire had never seen him so close to uncertainty.

He reached into his shirt pocket and removed a small brass key.

"Your mother's desk."

Claire frowned.

"What about it?"

Richard placed the key on the table.

"I never cleared the bottom drawer."

Lauren stared at him.

"Why are you telling us now?"

Richard looked at Claire.

"Because there are letters in there."

Claire's pulse quickened.

"Letters to who?"

"Both of you."

The ballroom disappeared from Claire's attention.

Richard stepped backward.

"I should have given them to you years ago."

Claire looked at the key.

Another withheld future.

Another decision made for them.

But this time, Richard did not reach for it again.

He turned and walked out of the ballroom alone.

Claire picked up the brass key.

Lauren stared at it in her hand.

"Do we go tonight?"

Claire looked at her sister's wedding dress, the half-eaten cake, and the guests beginning to dance again.

Then she closed her fingers around the key.

May you like

"Tomorrow morning."

Because for the first time, they did not have to let Richard's secret decide how their night ended.
