Chapter 10 - The Sister Who Stayed Behind.

Emma felt anger before surprise.
"You are my aunt?"
Margaret nodded.
"Yes."
"You watched me work here for eleven months."
"Yes."
"You watched Victoria hit me."
Margaret flinched.
"Yes."
Emma stepped closer.
"And you said nothing."
"I was afraid."
"Of whom?"
Margaret looked toward the portraits of Vivian Vale.
Emma followed her gaze.
"She's alive."
It was not a question.
Margaret's silence answered anyway.
Adrian tore open Jonathan's envelope.
Inside was a letter and a small photograph.
The photograph showed Catherine Bell holding a baby.
Jonathan stood beside her.
On the back was written one name.
EMILY.
Emma stared at it.
"My name is Emma."
Margaret nodded slowly.
"Catherine changed it."
Adrian read the letter aloud.
"Adrian, if Catherine's daughter reaches this house, then every barrier I built has failed or succeeded, and I cannot know which."
He stopped.
His voice tightened.
Then he continued.
"Her name at birth was Emily Catherine Bell."
Emma gripped the back of a chair.
"I am her father."
The room seemed to lose all sound.
Adrian lowered the letter.
Emma looked at him.
He looked as stunned as she felt.
She forced herself to speak.
Adrian swallowed.
"Catherine and I made mistakes that hurt people we loved, but Emily is innocent of them."
"Vivian discovered the affair before Emily was born."
Victoria closed her eyes.
"She threatened Catherine, then used Richard to erase her identity from financial and legal records."
Margaret began crying quietly.
Adrian continued.
"I staged Catherine's death on paper to protect her and the child, but Vivian found them twice."
Emma remembered moving apartments without warning.
Changing schools.
Her mother refusing to answer unknown phone calls.
The strange fear of black cars.
The letter continued.
"If Emily ever comes back, do not assume she came by accident."
Adrian paused.
"What does that mean?"
Margaret wiped her eyes.
"Jonathan believed Vivian would eventually use Emma to get into the house."
Emma recoiled.
"Use me?"
"He didn't know whether Vivian would recruit you, threaten you, or arrange your employment without your knowledge."
Adrian looked at Emma's staff badge.
Employee 0417.
The legacy override from Richard.
Emma's stomach twisted.
"I didn't choose this house because of Richard."
Adrian looked at her.
"I know."
"Do you?"
"I believe you."
She laughed bitterly.
"Belief has not exactly been reliable tonight."
Victoria stepped forward.
"Emma is right."
Everyone looked at her.
She continued.
"We need evidence, not faith."
Emma stared at the woman who had called her trash hours earlier.
"That's rich coming from you."
Victoria accepted the insult.
"Yes."
For the first time, she sounded ashamed.
Adrian finished the letter silently.
Then his expression changed.
"There's a final paragraph."
He read it aloud.
"The Asteria necklace is not an heirloom."
Victoria frowned.
"What?"
"The diamonds are real, but the clasp contains a data capsule."
Emma remembered Malcolm's mention of a tracking tag.
Jonathan's letter continued.
"Inside it is the only complete copy of the ledger's missing names."
Adrian looked toward the evidence bag containing the real necklace.
"That is why it was in B-17."
Margaret nodded.
"Catherine hid it there."
"Then why make a replica and frame Emma?" Victoria asked.
A voice answered from the doorway.
"Because I needed the police to find the real one."
Richard Vale stood there.
He was in his early sixties, silver-haired, composed, and dressed in a dark overcoat despite being inside.
Two police officers were behind him.
Adrian stiffened.
"Uncle Richard."
Richard looked at Emma.
"You have your mother's eyes."
Emma's skin crawled.
Adrian stepped toward him.
"Did you hire her?"
Richard smiled faintly.
"No."
"Did you assign her badge number?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
Richard looked toward the necklace.
"To wake my brother's security system."
Adrian stared.
Richard continued calmly.
"Jonathan built the system to expose us."
"Us?"
Richard's smile disappeared.
"Me."
He looked toward Victoria.
"Her father."
Then toward Margaret.
"And several people who are already dead."
Adrian's voice became ice.
"What about my mother?"
Richard looked at him for a long moment.
"Vivian was never part of our conspiracy."
Emma frowned.
"The ledger says V.H."
Richard nodded.
"Yes."
"Then who is V.H.?"
Richard looked directly at Victoria.
"Victor Hale."
Victoria stopped breathing.
Her father's name had been Victor.
Richard's next words struck her harder than anything else that night.
"And your father is not dead."
Richard did not ask forgiveness when the first officers placed him under temporary supervision.
That almost made Adrian angrier.
His uncle had spent decades converting fear into procedure, turning crimes into paperwork and betrayals into decisions made for someone else's good.
"You keep saying you protected people," Adrian told him.
Richard looked suddenly old.
"That is what I called it so I could sleep."
"What do you call it now?"
Richard looked toward Emma.
"Cowardice with excellent lawyers."
May you like
Emma did not smile.
But she remembered the phrase because it was the first honest description she had heard from a Vale all night.
