Chapter 14 - Three Minutes to Midnight.

11:40 P.M.
Emma could hear the greenhouse clock ticking over the sound of her own heartbeat.
Vivian's two officers controlled the doorway.
Malcolm stood with his hands visible.
Daniel remained cuffed near the tunnel entrance, watching everyone with a strange expression.
Victoria stood beside Emma.
Adrian faced his mother.
Two minutes remained until 11:42.
Emma did not know what would happen then.
She only knew Jonathan had chosen that time for a reason.
"Who planted the replica?" Emma asked again.
Vivian tilted her head.
"Why does that matter now?"
"Because you built your life on knowing what everyone else did."
Emma forced herself not to glance at the clock.
"And you don't know."
Vivian's eyes sharpened.
"Do you think provoking me makes you clever?"
"No."
"I think it makes you nervous."
Victoria looked at Emma, then understood.
She joined in.
"She is right."
Vivian turned toward her.
Victoria stepped forward.
"You knew about the real necklace."
"You knew about B-17."
"You knew Daniel would take the capsule."
"But you did not know a replica would be found in Emma's bag."
Vivian's mouth tightened.
"Your performance in the ballroom was embarrassing enough without pretending it was strategy."
Victoria's shame flickered across her face.
"I received an anonymous message saying the maid had stolen my necklace."
Emma looked at her.
Victoria had never admitted that.
"What message?"
Victoria took out her phone.
"At 9:05."
She showed Emma.
CHECK THE MAID'S BROWN BAG.
SHE TOOK WHAT BELONGS TO YOU.
Emma's anger returned.
"And you hit me because of a text."
Victoria looked down.
"Yes."
"You didn't ask me one question first."
"No."
"You called me trash."
Victoria's face crumpled slightly.
"Yes."
Emma stared at her.
There would be time for that later if they survived the next minute.
11:41.
Adrian continued the distraction.
"Mother, where is Margaret?"
"I told you."
"Old chapel."
"Yes."
"Alive?"
Vivian looked at him.
"For the moment."
Adrian's face went cold.
"You keep calling this protection."
"Because that is what leadership looks like when children are not making the decisions."
Adrian laughed once.
"You disappeared for twelve years."
"And the company tripled in value."
"Because I ran it."
"Because I removed obstacles before you ever saw them."
Adrian stared at her.
"You've been controlling Vale Holdings from the shadows."
Vivian smiled.
"Now you're beginning to understand."
11:41:40.
Emma felt the capsule against her thigh beneath the uniform fabric.
Vivian held out her hand again.
"Enough."
"Give it to me."
Adrian slowly opened his empty pocket.
"I don't have it."
Vivian's face changed.
Her gaze snapped to Malcolm.
Then Victoria.
Then Emma.
11:41:51.
"Search them."
One officer moved toward Emma.
Victoria stepped in front of her.
"Touch her and you'll have to go through me."
Emma almost laughed at the savage irony.
Hours earlier, Victoria had been the one grabbing her collar.
11:41:57.
The officer shoved Victoria aside.
Adrian lunged.
Malcolm moved at the same time.
The greenhouse exploded into motion.
11:42 P.M.
Every light in Vale House went black.
Then every vintage monitor in the mansion turned on.
A recorded voice filled the security speakers.
Jonathan Vale.
"If this message is playing, Catherine's identifier has entered the house, the Asteria protocol has been activated, and Archive B has been opened."
Vivian froze.
Jonathan's voice continued.
"The evidence you are hearing has already been transmitted to six external recipients."
Vivian's face emptied.
"No."
"Federal investigators."
"Two independent newspapers."
"One international law firm."
"And the trustees of the Vale Foundation."
Adrian stared at the speakers.
Jonathan continued.
"Destroying the necklace will change nothing."
Vivian lunged at Emma.
She knew.
Somehow she knew Emma had the capsule.
Emma stumbled backward.
Victoria caught Vivian's arm.
The two women crashed into a table of orchids.
Malcolm disarmed one corrupt officer.
Daniel kicked the other officer's knee from behind despite being cuffed.
Adrian grabbed Emma and pulled her away.
Sirens rose beyond the estate gates.
Real sirens this time.
Dozens of them.
Vivian stood amid broken flowerpots, breathing hard.
Her calm was gone.
"Jonathan was bluffing."
A printer in the security room began spitting pages.
Phones throughout the house started ringing.
Adrian's phone lit with notifications.
Then Victoria's.
Then Malcolm's.
The story had left the mansion.
Vivian stared at the glowing screens as if watching the walls close around her.
Emma pulled the capsule from her hidden pocket.
"You spent twenty-two years trying to control every moment."
Vivian looked at her.
Emma held up the tiny piece of data.
"You missed one."
Federal agents entered the greenhouse three minutes later.
Vivian did not resist arrest.
Richard was arrested upstairs.
The two corrupt officers were taken with her.
Daniel requested protective custody and began naming people before the handcuffs were properly tightened.
Victoria's father, Victor, agreed to testify remotely and return under federal protection.
By dawn, agents found Margaret alive in the old chapel, locked in a storage room but unharmed.
Emma ran to her.
Margaret hugged her tightly.
Emma did not hug back.
Something still bothered her.
The anonymous message to Victoria.
The replica necklace.
Vivian had not planted it.
Daniel denied planting it.
Richard denied planting it.
Malcolm had been on camera elsewhere.
Emma looked over Margaret's shoulder.
There was a faint smear of silver polishing compound on the older woman's sleeve.
The same compound Emma used every week on jewelry replicas displayed in the mansion's private gallery.
Emma slowly stepped away.
"Aunt Margaret."
Margaret's face changed.
Emma's stomach dropped.
"It was you."
The seconds before 11:42 stretched because everyone in the greenhouse wanted something different from the same moment.
Vivian wanted the capsule.
Adrian wanted his mother to become the woman he remembered long enough to explain herself.
Victoria wanted proof her father had not abandoned her willingly.
Malcolm wanted to survive the job he should never have accepted.
Emma wanted Margaret alive.
None of them knew that Jonathan's final mechanism cared about none of those wishes.
It had been built around a simpler assumption.
People powerful enough to bury evidence would eventually gather in the same place when they believed the evidence had resurfaced.
May you like
The trap did not need to predict their choices.
It only needed to wait for their fear.
