Chapter 7 - The Man in the Vault.

The emergency lights came on in deep red strips along the vault floor.

A figure stood beyond the open steel door.

Emma recognized Malcolm immediately.

His security jacket was gone.

Blood stained one side of his shirt.

Daniel raised his weapon.

"Hands where I can see them."

Malcolm lifted both hands.

"If I wanted them dead, you would not have heard me speak."

One of the officers moved forward.

Malcolm shook his head.

"Check the north camera before you arrest me."

The officer hesitated.

Adrian stepped between them.

"You ran."

"Because someone shot a tranquilizer at me."

"You took the files."

"Because the person who tried to drug me was coming for them."

Victoria laughed bitterly.

"And we should trust you because you say so?"

Malcolm looked at her.

"You paid me to uncover the truth."

"I paid you for information."

"Same difference until the truth points at you."

Emma clutched the white envelope.

"Did you put the necklace in my bag?"

Malcolm's face changed.

"No."

"Did you know someone would?"

He looked toward Victoria.

"Not until tonight."

Adrian stepped closer.

"Who was in the footage with you?"

Malcolm exhaled.

"Victoria."

Victoria shook her head.

"Liar."

"You gave me cash and a list of archive locations."

"You asked for payment."

"I asked for expenses."

"You demanded fifty thousand dollars."

"Because your father's old associates were not answering questions for free."

Adrian raised a hand.

"Enough."

He turned to Malcolm.

"Why did the CCTV show a timestamp two hours in the future?"

Malcolm looked surprised.

"It did?"

"11:42 P.M."

Malcolm frowned.

"That recording happened three nights ago at 11:42."

Emma felt a chill.

"Then why did it appear tonight?"

Malcolm looked at the cassette recorder in Emma's hand.

"Jonathan."

Adrian's face hardened.

"My father is dead."

"I know."

"Then explain."

Malcolm lowered his hands slowly when the officer allowed it.

"Your father built a dead-man system into the analog security network."

Victoria whispered.

"I told him to destroy that thing."

Everyone turned toward her.

She froze.

Adrian's voice dropped.

"You told whom?"

Victoria looked at Malcolm.

Malcolm smiled without humor.

"There it is."

Victoria's face twisted.

"I meant Jonathan."

"Jonathan died before the system was finished."

Victoria said nothing.

Malcolm continued.

"The system watches for specific triggers."

"What triggers?" Emma asked.

"Old camera channels activating, archive doors opening, and certain objects moving through protected zones."

Adrian looked at the necklace.

"The Asteria."

Malcolm nodded.

"Your grandmother had a tracking tag embedded in the clasp after a robbery attempt in 1998."

Emma stared at the diamonds.

"So when someone moved the real necklace into the bank box, the system recorded it."

"Maybe."

"And when the replica appeared tonight?"

Malcolm shook his head.

"The replica wouldn't trigger anything."

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"Then something else triggered the monitor."

Malcolm looked directly at Emma.

"Her."

Emma stiffened.

"Me?"

"Your staff badge uses an old identifier."

"I got it eleven months ago."

"The number wasn't random."

Malcolm took out his phone and displayed a photograph of an old security database.

Employee 0417: Catherine Bell.

Emma stared at the number.

Her own badge ended in 0417.

"Who assigned it?"

Malcolm looked at Adrian.

"Human resources says the number came from a legacy override signed by Richard Vale."

Adrian's anger became visible.

"My uncle hired Emma?"

"Not directly."

"Then why assign my father's dead bookkeeper's number to her daughter?"

Malcolm shook his head.

"I don't know."

Emma looked down at the cassette recorder.

"Maybe this knows."

The recorder was old but carefully preserved.

The bank manager found batteries in a maintenance drawer.

Emma pressed play.

Static crackled.

Then Jonathan Vale's voice filled the vault.

"Catherine, if you are hearing this, Richard has already moved against us."

Adrian went completely still.

Jonathan continued.

"The foundation theft is not the real crime."

Victoria closed her eyes.

"The stolen money was used to buy judges, inspectors, and witnesses."

Emma's breathing became shallow.

"The ledger contains names, but one name is missing because I was afraid to write it down."

The tape hissed.

"The person directing Richard is inside my own household."

Adrian looked toward Victoria.

She looked back at him with tears forming in her eyes.

Jonathan's voice continued.

"If anything happens to me, trust Catherine."

A pause followed.

Then came the sentence that changed Emma's life.

"And protect our daughter."

The tape clicked off.

No one moved.

Emma stared at Adrian.

Adrian stared at her.

Victoria whispered.

"Oh, God."

Emma's voice barely worked.

"What did he mean by our daughter?"

Malcolm looked away.

Adrian did not.

He looked at Emma as if seeing her face for the first time.

After Jonathan's recording ended, Emma asked to hear it again.

No one objected.

The second time, she listened not for the shocking words but for the sounds behind them.

A clock ticked.

Paper shifted.

At one point a woman whispered something too softly to understand.

Emma rewound the tape.

"Who is that?"

Malcolm increased the volume.

The whisper remained indistinct, but the voice was clearly female.

Victoria leaned closer.

"Catherine?"

Emma shook her head.

She could not recognize her mother's younger voice with certainty.

Yet the whisper proved Jonathan had not recorded the message alone.

May you like

Someone had been present when he created the warning.

Someone who might still know what he left unsaid.
