Chapter 12 - The Diamond Inside the Diamond.

Daniel knew every blind corner in Vale House.

He had designed the modern security routes himself.

Within ninety seconds, he disappeared from the main cameras.

Adrian ordered every gate sealed.

This time there were no guests to witness the command.

Only police, exhausted staff, and a family finally realizing the mansion had more secrets than rooms.

Emma stood in the security office watching camera feeds cycle across twelve screens.

"There."

She pointed at a service corridor near the greenhouse.

A shadow crossed the frame.

Malcolm leaned closer.

"That's him."

Victoria stood behind them, still barefoot.

Her black gown looked almost severe under fluorescent lights.

"Why would Daniel take it?"

Malcolm gave her a hard look.

"Because someone paid him more than you paid me."

Victoria did not react to the insult.

Adrian grabbed a radio.

"North team, greenhouse corridor."

Emma noticed Margaret again.

Her aunt stood near the door, twisting a handkerchief around her fingers.

"You know where he's going," Emma said.

Margaret looked at her.

"No."

"You reacted before he ran."

"I was frightened."

"You were frightened before the necklace was gone."

Margaret's eyes filled with tears.

"Emma, not now."

"When?"

Emma stepped closer.

"When will someone in this house answer a question before another person disappears?"

Margaret looked at Adrian.

Then she surrendered.

"There is an old passage beneath the greenhouse."

Malcolm swore.

"Why isn't it on the plans?"

"Because Vivian had it sealed after Jonathan discovered it."

Adrian stared at Margaret.

"You knew?"

"Catherine and I used it once."

"For what?"

Margaret looked at Emma.

"To get her out of the house."

Emma's breath caught.

"I was here?"

Margaret nodded.

"You were a baby."

They ran for the greenhouse.

The elegant glass structure stood dark beyond the ballroom, filled with palms, orchids, and the smell of wet soil.

Adrian found the concealed hatch beneath a stone planter after Margaret showed him where to press.

A narrow staircase descended into darkness.

Malcolm went first.

Emma followed despite Adrian's objection.

"I'm not waiting upstairs while everyone discusses my life below me."

He stopped arguing.

The tunnel ended in an old carriage room beneath the east lawn.

Daniel stood beside a steel worktable.

The Asteria necklace lay beneath a magnifying lamp.

He had opened the antique clasp.

Inside was a capsule smaller than a grain of rice.

Daniel held a pair of tweezers over it.

"Don't move," Malcolm ordered.

Daniel smiled.

"You're late."

He dropped the capsule into a glass vial.

Adrian stepped forward.

"Who are you working for?"

Daniel looked at him almost sadly.

"Your mother."

Adrian's face went blank.

"She's dead."

"No."

The answer came too quickly to be theater.

Victoria whispered, "Where is she?"

Daniel looked toward the tunnel behind them.

"Closer than you think."

Malcolm moved toward him.

Daniel suddenly smashed the vial against the steel table.

Emma screamed.

A clear liquid spread across the metal.

The capsule rolled toward the edge.

Adrian lunged and caught it with his fingertips before it fell into a drain.

Daniel tried to run.

Malcolm tackled him against the wall.

Police arrived seconds later.

Daniel did not resist once they cuffed him.

He only laughed.

"You still think the necklace matters."

Adrian held the capsule up.

"You stole it."

"Because I was ordered to."

"By Vivian?"

Daniel smiled.

"Ask the housekeeper."

Everyone turned toward Margaret.

She had not followed them into the tunnel.

Emma ran back first.

Margaret was gone from the greenhouse.

Her handkerchief lay beside the open hatch.

On it was a handwritten note.

SHE KNOWS I TALKED.

Adrian read it.

"Who knows?"

Emma already knew the answer.

"Vivian."

Malcolm connected the capsule to an old forensic reader provided by the police digital unit.

The device took three attempts to recognize it.

Then a folder appeared.

JVAULT_FINAL.

Inside were scanned contracts, photographs, bank authorizations, and audio files.

One document was labeled CHAIN OF COMMAND.

Adrian opened it.

At the top was Richard Vale.

Below him was Victor Hale.

Beside Victor's name were the words COERCED / EXITED 2004.

Below that were twelve other names.

Daniel Cross appeared near the bottom.

Then came a line in Jonathan's handwriting.

PRIMARY DIRECTOR: V.H.

Adrian stared at it.

"Victor Hale again."

Emma shook her head.

"No."

She pointed to a second note beside the initials.

V.H. IS THE NAME SHE USED BEFORE VALE.

Adrian stopped breathing.

Vivian's maiden name was Hart.

Vivian Hart.

V.H.

Victoria whispered.

"Richard lied."

A voice came from behind them.

"Richard told the truth he was allowed to tell."

Everyone turned.

An elderly woman stood at the top of the greenhouse stairs.

Her hair was silver.

Her posture was perfectly straight.

Her eyes were the same pale gray as Adrian's.

Adrian dropped the reader.

"Mother."

Vivian Hart Vale smiled.

"Hello, darling."

While officers secured Daniel, Emma examined the opened clasp of the Asteria necklace.

The diamonds were magnificent, but the mechanism hidden behind them was crude and practical.

Jonathan had chosen the family's most celebrated symbol of wealth to carry evidence of the things that wealth had concealed.

Emma thought her mother would have appreciated the irony.

Victoria touched one diamond with a gloved fingertip.

"I spent years thinking this necklace meant I belonged here."

Emma looked at her.

"Did it work?"

May you like

Victoria gave a tired, humorless smile.

"Apparently the necklace knew more about this family than I did."
