Chapter 1 - The Ash and The Echo.

.The wedding hall fell into a suffocating silence.
Crystal chandeliers burned above hundreds of white roses, yet the room suddenly felt colder than winter.
Claire Bennett stood beneath the floral arch with tears on her cheeks and one hand trembling around her bouquet.
Behind her, Margaret Hale's face was twisted with fury.
"You don't deserve my son!"
The words cracked through the ceremony like breaking glass.
Guests turned in their seats, phones lowered, smiles vanishing.
Ethan Hale stepped between his mother and his bride before Margaret could move closer.
"Mom, back off!"
His voice was controlled, but the muscles in his jaw were tight.
Margaret jerked her arm free and pointed at Claire as if she were accusing a criminal.
"You think I don't know what kind of woman she is?"
Claire flinched.
For six months, Margaret had found a reason to insult her clothes, her family, her job, and even the way she laughed.
Claire had endured it because Ethan kept promising marriage would create a boundary his mother could no longer cross.
Now Margaret had crossed it in front of everyone.
"Enough," Ethan said.
He reached for Claire's hand.
Margaret lunged forward again.
Claire instinctively turned away, and a pearl pin holding the back of her veil slipped loose.
Her dark hair shifted from her neck.
A small reddish scar appeared just below her hairline.
It curved in the unmistakable shape of a crescent moon.
Margaret stopped so abruptly that Ethan nearly collided with her.
Her finger remained suspended in the air.
The anger drained from her face.
Claire expected another insult.
Instead, Margaret stared as if she had seen someone rise from a grave.
"That... that crescent scar..."
Her voice was suddenly weak.
Claire touched the back of her neck.
"What about it?"
Margaret's chest rose sharply.
Tears gathered in eyes that had been full of hatred only seconds earlier.
"Where did you get that?"
Claire frowned.
"I've had it since I was a baby."
Margaret pressed a hand to her chest.
A strangled sound escaped her throat.
Ethan looked between them.
"Mom, what is happening?"
Margaret ignored him.
She seized Claire by both shoulders, not with anger now, but with desperate disbelief.
Claire gasped and tried to pull away.
"Let me go!"
"No," Margaret whispered.
Then her voice rose until every guest could hear.
"You're my lost daughter!"
A collective gasp moved through the room.
Ethan froze.
Claire's bouquet slipped from her fingers and struck the marble floor.
White roses scattered around her shoes.
"What did you say?"
Margaret began sobbing.
"You were taken from me twenty-three years ago."
Claire shook her head violently.
"That's impossible."
Ethan's face had gone pale.
"Mom, if Claire is your daughter..."
Margaret turned toward him.
For the first time, fear entered her expression.
She looked at the son she had raised for twenty-eight years.
"Ethan," she said, "you are not my biological son."
The wedding hall seemed to tilt around him.
"You're adopted."
Claire covered her mouth.
Ethan stared at Margaret as if the woman before him had become a stranger.
The officiant quietly stepped away from the altar.
No one knew whether the wedding had just been saved or destroyed.
Then an elderly man seated in the back row stood up so quickly his chair toppled over.
Margaret saw him.
Her tears stopped.
The man turned toward the exit.
Margaret's voice dropped into a whisper filled with terror.
"He knows."
Ethan followed her stare.
"Who is he?"
May you like
Margaret did not answer.
She simply ran after the stranger.
