Chapter 3 - A Father With Two Names.

Claire chased David through the reception hall while guests scattered from his path.

Her father had never run from anything in his life.

He had been the calm parent who fixed leaking sinks, packed school lunches, and waited outside every dance class until Claire was old enough to drive.

Now he looked terrified of her.

"Dad, stop!"

David disappeared through a service door near the kitchen.

Claire followed him into a narrow corridor lined with stainless-steel carts.

Ethan and Margaret were only a few steps behind.

David reached the emergency exit, but a caterer blocked the door with a tray.

He turned and found Claire standing ten feet away.

"Why did that doctor know you?"

David said nothing.

"Why did Margaret say you took me?"

His face crumpled.

"Because I did."

Claire felt the floor vanish beneath her.

Ethan caught her elbow before she fell against the wall.

"No," Claire said.

David's eyes filled.

"I didn't steal you from her."

Margaret pushed past Ethan.

"Then explain how my daughter ended up in your house."

David looked at Margaret with old resentment.

"Your family gave her away."

Margaret slapped him.

The sound echoed down the corridor.

"My newborn daughter vanished during a hospital fire."

"A fire your father arranged."

Margaret went still.

David took a breath.

"Your father's real name was Charles Vale."

Ethan frowned.

"Grandfather's name was Henry Hale."

"Henry Hale was a name he bought," David said.

Margaret whispered, "Stop."

David ignored her.

"Charles Vale owned a private adoption network that moved infants through hospitals, charities, and shell foundations for nearly thirty years."

Claire stared at him.

"And you were part of it?"

David shut his eyes.

"I was an accountant."

Claire's disgust was immediate.

"You bought babies?"

"No."

"You stole them?"

"No."

"Then what did you do?"

David looked ashamed.

"I hid money."

That answer hurt more because it sounded true.

He explained that he had discovered Vale's network while auditing a medical charity.

When he tried to expose it, Vale threatened Linda, who was unable to have children and had recently suffered a miscarriage.

Then the fire happened.

A nurse placed a soot-covered infant in David's arms and told him to leave through the loading dock.

"She said if I stayed, the baby would disappear forever."

Claire's voice shook.

"What nurse?"

"Her name was Miriam Cole."

Margaret grabbed the edge of a metal counter.

"Miriam was my night nurse."

David nodded.

"She told me the child belonged to a woman named Margaret."

"Then why didn't you bring me back?" Claire demanded.

David looked at her with unbearable guilt.

"Because by morning, the hospital records said Margaret's baby was dead."

"You could have gone to the police."

"I tried."

He pulled out his wallet with shaking fingers.

Behind a faded family photograph was an old newspaper clipping.

The headline described an accountant named Daniel Bennett killed in a highway accident twenty-three years earlier.

Claire stared at the photograph beside the article.

It was her father.

"Daniel Bennett?"

David nodded.

"That was my real first name."

Ethan whispered, "You faked your death."

"Because Vale's people were looking for me."

Claire backed away.

"My entire life is built on lies."

David's eyes broke.

"Your mother Linda loved you more than anything."

"Did she know?"

David hesitated.

That hesitation was the answer.

Claire turned away, sick with betrayal.

Then Margaret asked the question no one else had considered.

"If Charles Vale was hunting you, why did he stop?"

David's face went white.

"He didn't."

A phone vibrated inside his jacket.

David looked at the screen.

May you like

The message contained only six words.

WE CAN SEE ALL OF YOU.
