Chapter 4 - The Photograph in the Nursery.

The wedding ended without vows.
Guests were quietly sent home while security locked every exterior door of the venue.
Claire changed out of her wedding shoes but refused to remove the dress.
She said she wanted to remember exactly what had been taken from her that day.
Ethan stayed beside her even though his own identity had collapsed in the same hour.
Margaret stood across the bridal suite, watching Claire with a hunger that made Claire uncomfortable.
"Please stop looking at me like that."
Margaret lowered her eyes.
"I'm sorry."
It was the first apology Claire had ever heard from her.
David placed his phone on the vanity.
The anonymous message had been sent from a number that vanished when Ethan tried to call it.
"We need the police," Ethan said.
David shook his head.
"Vale owned police officers."
"Vale is dead," Margaret replied.
David stared at her.
"You still believe that?"
Margaret's confidence weakened.
She had been told her father died in Switzerland twelve years earlier.
There had been a funeral, a sealed casket, and a private burial.
David laughed without humor.
"A sealed casket should have told you everything."
Claire turned toward Margaret.
"Take me to your house."
Margaret blinked.
"Why?"
"You said you had proof."
Margaret nodded slowly.
"I kept the nursery."
Two hours later, they entered the Hale estate through a side gate to avoid photographers already gathering at the main entrance.
The mansion was silent except for the clicking of Margaret's heels.
She led them upstairs to a locked room at the end of the east wing.
The key hung from a chain beneath her dress.
When the door opened, Claire smelled dust and lavender.
A white crib stood beneath faded wallpaper painted with silver moons.
Tiny dresses remained inside a glass cabinet.
A rocking horse sat untouched near the window.
Ethan had lived in this house since infancy and had never been allowed inside.
"You told me this room belonged to Aunt Rose," he said.
Margaret looked ashamed.
"I couldn't tell you."
"You couldn't tell me anything."
Claire moved toward the crib.
A framed photograph rested on the dresser.
It showed a younger Margaret in a hospital bed holding a newborn girl.
The baby's face was turned away, but a tiny red crescent was visible near the neck.
Claire's knees weakened.
Margaret came beside her.
"I named you Charlotte."
Claire stared at the picture.
"My name is Claire."
"I know."
Margaret's voice cracked.
"I won't take that from you."
Ethan opened a drawer and found a stack of letters tied with a ribbon.
Every envelope was addressed to Charlotte.
One for her first birthday.
One for kindergarten.
One for graduation.
Margaret had written them for a daughter she believed was dead.
Claire opened none of them.
She could not decide whether they were proof of love or another emotional trap.
Then David noticed something behind the photograph.
A small brass key had been taped to the frame.
Margaret frowned.
"I've never seen that before."
The tape looked new.
Ethan removed the key.
A folded piece of paper was tucked underneath it.
On the paper was an address and a handwritten sentence.
CHARLOTTE DESERVES TO KNOW WHY ETHAN WAS CHOSEN.
Claire looked at Ethan.
He stared back at her.
For the first time since the ceremony, the question shifted away from Claire's past.

Someone had placed evidence inside a room no outsider was supposed to enter.
And they knew Ethan was adopted before he did.
