Chapter 9 - The Grandfather Who Never Died.

Rebecca refused to speak further until the bedroom door was locked and the curtains were closed.

She moved with the caution of someone who had learned that walls could listen.

Ethan sat opposite her on the carpet because she would not let him stand near the doorway.

Claire remained beside him.

Margaret stood farther back, aware that her presence caused Rebecca pain.

"Charles is alive," Rebecca said.

"He was alive three months ago."

Margaret shook her head.

"I attended his funeral twelve years ago."

Rebecca smiled without humor.

"You attended a performance."

Charles had staged his death after federal investigators began examining several Vale Foundation accounts.

From then on, he operated through attorneys, trustees, and private security contractors.

Rebecca said he visited St. Agnes under the name Mr. Gray.

He never came alone.

"Why keep you alive?" Claire asked.

Rebecca looked toward Ethan.

"Because I was leverage."

Charles believed Ethan would eventually discover his birth records.

If that happened, Rebecca could be used to control him.

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"Control me for what?"

Rebecca walked to an old dresser and removed a photograph hidden beneath the bottom drawer.

It showed Charles Vale standing beside a stone building on a remote coastal property.

On the back were coordinates and the words BLACKWOOD HOUSE.

"That is where he keeps the original ledgers."

David, who had been silent near the window, stepped closer.

"The ledgers from the adoption network?"

Rebecca nodded.

"Names, payments, judges, doctors, families, everything."

Claire realized why David's accounting evidence had never been enough to destroy Vale.

The real records still existed.

Margaret stared at the photograph.

"Why would he keep them?"

"Because secrets are more valuable than money."

Rebecca turned toward Claire.

"And because your existence threatened the one secret he could never erase."

Claire frowned.

Rebecca explained that Thomas Reed, Claire's biological father, had discovered the adoption network before he was killed.

He copied a portion of the ledger and hid it somewhere Charles never found.

Charles believed Margaret knew where it was.

Margaret looked stunned.

"Thomas never told me."

"He didn't have time."

Rebecca said Thomas left one clue with Margaret's newborn daughter.

Claire instinctively touched the crescent scar.

Rebecca shook her head.

"Not the scar."

She pointed at Claire's wedding necklace.

Claire looked down.

A small antique silver locket hung against the lace bodice.

Linda Bennett had given it to her on her sixteenth birthday and said it had been with her when she was found.

Claire opened it.

Inside was a tiny photograph of Linda and David placed there years later.

Rebecca asked for a knife.

Ethan carefully pried away the interior backing.

A paper-thin metal strip slid into his palm.

Numbers were etched across it.

David recognized them immediately.

"Bank box code."

Margaret began crying again.

"Thomas."

Claire stared at the object that had rested against her skin for years.

Her father had protected evidence by sending it away with his daughter.

A sudden knock sounded at the bedroom door.

Everyone froze.

The night aide called from outside.

"Mrs. Vane, you have a visitor."

Margaret admitted that Charles had always hated uncertainty more than disobedience.

He collected insurance policies, duplicate keys, private recordings, and favors from powerful people so that no person could ever surprise him.

Claire understood that finding Blackwood House would not be enough.

They would need to create the one thing Charles feared most: a situation he could not control.

Rebecca's face turned white.

"At two in the morning?"

The aide hesitated.

"He says he's family."

May you like

Rebecca whispered one word.

"Charles."
