Chapter 1 - The Hand That Stopped the Room.

The ballroom had been loud enough to hide almost anything until Vivian Hart's hand came down and the entire room seemed to forget how to breathe.
Elizabeth Monroe stood beside the champagne table in a sapphire one-shoulder gown, her fingertips slowly rising to the warmth on her cheek.
The string quartet continued for half a measure before one violin faltered and the music collapsed into silence.
Vivian adjusted the burgundy sleeve of her gown as if she had merely brushed away a speck of dust.
"Don't stand beside my son like you made him successful."
Her voice was calm, which made the insult cut deeper than a shout ever could.
Elizabeth looked past her toward Daniel Hart, the man who had asked her to move into his apartment eleven months earlier and had spoken about marriage three nights ago.
Daniel did not move.
He did not reach for her.
He did not ask whether she was all right.
He checked the faces around them instead.
That was the first thing Elizabeth noticed.
The second was that he looked embarrassed by her, not by his mother.
"Are you going to let her do that?"
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"Don't embarrass my mother."
Elizabeth stared at him, certain for one impossible second that she had misheard.
"She just struck me in front of half your company."
"Lower your voice."
A few guests pretended to study their glasses.
Others had stopped pretending altogether.
Elizabeth recognized several senior executives from Westbridge Holdings, including people who had praised Daniel all evening for leading the company's most successful regional turnaround in a decade.
Vivian smiled faintly.
"You see what I mean, Daniel?"
Elizabeth turned toward her.
"No, I think everyone sees what you mean."
Daniel stepped closer.
"Enough."
Elizabeth looked at him again.
Something inside her became very still.
For months she had explained away his silences, his impatience, and the way he allowed Vivian to rewrite every disagreement until Elizabeth somehow became the problem.
She had called it loyalty to family.
Now, surrounded by two hundred witnesses, she saw it for what it was.
"You're right."
Daniel seemed relieved too quickly.
"Good."
Elizabeth picked up her silver clutch from the table.
"I've had enough."
She turned toward the ballroom doors.
Daniel caught her arm before she had taken two steps.
The grip was sharp enough to stop her but not enough to make her cry out.
Elizabeth looked down at his hand.
Then she looked directly into his eyes.
"Let go of me."
"You're not walking out and making this worse."
"Take your hand off me."
His fingers stayed where they were.
Elizabeth pulled her arm free.
"Don't ever put your hands on me like that again."
A flash of anger moved across Daniel's face.
It was fast, but everyone close enough saw it.
His hand came up.
Elizabeth did not step backward.
She only looked at him with a kind of disbelief that hurt more than fear.
Then another hand closed around Daniel's wrist in midair.
The movement was clean and immediate.
Daniel froze.
Arthur Hale, chairman of Westbridge Holdings, stood beside him in a dark navy suit with silver hair and a face that revealed almost nothing.
"Enough."
Daniel's confidence disappeared so quickly it was almost startling.
"Mr. Chairman."
Arthur did not release his wrist at once.
"You will never raise your hand to her again."
Daniel swallowed.
"Sir, this is a family matter."
Arthur's eyes hardened.
"It stopped being private when you made it public."
He released Daniel and turned to Elizabeth.
"Are you all right?"
Elizabeth nodded once because she did not trust her voice yet.
Vivian stepped forward.
"Arthur, you don't understand what she has been doing to my son."
Arthur finally looked at her.
"I understand more than you think."
The words landed heavily.
Daniel's expression changed.
"What does that mean?"
Arthur glanced toward the executives standing around the ballroom.
Then he looked back at Daniel.
"It means this evening was supposed to end with an announcement."
Daniel's shoulders loosened slightly, as though he expected the promotion everyone had been whispering about.
Arthur reached into the inside pocket of his suit and removed a folded card.
"That announcement is no longer happening."
Daniel went pale.
Vivian's voice sharpened.
"You cannot punish him because his girlfriend caused a scene."
Elizabeth almost laughed at the absurdity of it.
Arthur did not.
"Mrs. Hart, the scene is not the reason."
He handed the card to Daniel.
Daniel opened it.
His eyes moved across the page once.
Then again.
Elizabeth watched the color drain from his face.
At the top of the card were three words she could read from where she stood.
PROJECT NORTHSTAR REVIEW.
Daniel looked at Arthur.
"Why is this being reviewed?"
Arthur's gaze shifted to Elizabeth.
"Because the board has received information that the person being celebrated tonight may not be the person who created the work."
The ballroom went silent all over again.
May you like
Daniel slowly turned toward Elizabeth.
And for the first time that night, he looked afraid of what she might say.
