Chapter 12 - Daniel's Last Secret.

Daniel remained standing while every person in the boardroom waited.

Elizabeth did not want another confession.

She wanted the day to end.

But Daniel had the expression of someone who had finally reached the point where holding back cost more than speaking.

"Northstar wasn't the only project."

Arthur Hale's gaze sharpened.

"Explain."

Daniel looked toward Marcus.

"He used the same system before."

Marcus laughed once.

"This is becoming desperate."

Daniel ignored him.

"Find talented people outside formal teams. Let them solve the problem. Put an executive name on the final result."

Elizabeth felt Maya go still behind her.

Arthur asked a quiet question.

"How many times?"

"I know of three."

Marcus stood.

"You are suspended and facing serious findings. Nothing you say is reliable."

Daniel turned toward him.

"Then you'll have no problem with them checking."

That stopped Marcus.

Daniel named two past initiatives.

One involved warehouse automation.

Another involved a pricing model from four years earlier.

The third was Northstar.

Rebecca wrote everything down.

Arthur called for the vice chairman suspension vote.

This time, it passed unanimously except for Marcus, who abstained.

Security did not escort him dramatically from the room.

There was no shouting.

No cinematic collapse.

He simply lost the authority to stay.

That quiet exit felt more final than any scene could have.

When the door closed behind him, Arthur looked exhausted.

"We adjourn until counsel completes preservation steps."

The directors left.

Vivian approached Elizabeth near the windows.

"I owe you an apology."

Elizabeth met her eyes.

"You owe me more than words."

Vivian nodded.

"I know."

"I don't forgive you."

Another nod.

"I know that too."

Elizabeth expected Vivian to become defensive.

She did not.

"I spent years convincing myself that protecting Daniel meant removing every person who made him uncomfortable."

Elizabeth said nothing.

"You were the first person he loved who would tell him no."

"And you hated me for it."

"Yes."

Vivian looked toward her son.

Daniel was speaking quietly with outside counsel.

"I thought you were pulling him away from me."

Elizabeth's voice was calm.

"He is a grown man."

Vivian looked ashamed again.

"I know."

Elizabeth picked up her bag.

"Then let him be one."

She left the boardroom without waiting for Daniel.

For the first time in two years, she walked through Westbridge headquarters without wondering whether he approved of what she had said.

Three days later, the independent review expanded.

Daniel remained suspended.

Marcus resigned his vice chairman title but stayed subject to the inquiry.

Patricia Hart's notary record was referred for professional review after she admitted Elizabeth had never appeared before her on the date listed.

Hart Events Consulting was frozen from further company work.

The board also confirmed that Elizabeth had created the core Northstar model.

Yet the finding did not give her the relief everyone expected.

Maya brought takeout to Elizabeth's temporary apartment the night the preliminary report arrived.

"You won."

Elizabeth looked at the document.

"It doesn't feel like winning."

"Maybe because this should never have been a contest."

Elizabeth smiled faintly.

"That sounds right."

Her phone rang.

Arthur Hale.

She answered.

"Ms. Monroe, I'd like to offer you a formal role."

Elizabeth closed her eyes.

She had expected the call.

"Chairman, I appreciate that."

"Head of strategic transformation."

Maya's eyes widened from across the table.

Arthur continued.

"Direct report to my office. Board visibility. Full authority over Northstar implementation."

It was the role Daniel had spent years trying to reach.

Elizabeth felt no thrill at the symmetry.

"I need to think."

"Of course."

"And if I accept, I have conditions."

Arthur paused.

"Good."

That answer surprised her.

"You haven't heard them."

"People who have conditions usually know what they need to do the job."

Elizabeth looked out the window.

"Then I'll send them tomorrow."

After the call, Maya grinned.

"You're going to take it."

"I don't know."

"You're going to make them rewrite half the company first."

Elizabeth laughed for the first time all week.

"That part I know."

At eleven forty-seven, someone knocked on her apartment door.

Elizabeth checked through the peephole.

Daniel stood in the hallway.

She did not open the door.

"What do you want?"

His voice came through the wood.

"Five minutes."

"No."

"Then I'll say it from here."

Elizabeth waited.

Daniel took a breath.

"I resigned tonight."

She closed her eyes.

"That's your decision."

"I know."

A pause followed.

"I also found the missing pages from your notebook."

Elizabeth opened her eyes.

"Where?"

"My mother's house."

"How did they get there?"

May you like

Daniel's answer came quietly.

"Because I put them there."
