Chapter 8 - The Email No One Expected.

Nobody in the boardroom looked at Elizabeth after Rebecca read the email.

They looked at Marcus Vale.

Marcus did not flinch.

"That message is being misinterpreted."

Arthur Hale leaned back.

"Then interpret it for us."

Marcus folded his hands.

"Daniel told me an outside consultant was helping informally. I advised him to keep the process clean."

Rebecca enlarged the message.

"You wrote, 'Keep it clean.'"

"Yes."

"After he said he would keep her off the formal team."

Marcus's patience thinned.

"I receive hundreds of emails."

Elizabeth watched Daniel.

He was staring at Marcus with an expression she had never seen before.

It was not loyalty.

It was recognition.

Daniel had spent the morning believing Marcus would save him.

Now he seemed to realize Marcus might be willing to let him carry the entire problem alone.

Arthur noticed too.

"Daniel."

Daniel looked up.

"Why was Elizabeth kept off the formal team?"

He hesitated.

Vivian spoke from the guest row.

"Because she wasn't qualified."

Elizabeth turned toward her.

"Then why did he ask me to rebuild the model?"

Vivian opened her mouth.

Daniel interrupted.

"Mom, stop."

It was the first time Elizabeth had heard him say those words to Vivian in two years.

Vivian stared at him.

Daniel looked at Arthur.

"I was told adding an outside consultant would delay the project."

"By whom?"

Daniel glanced toward Marcus.

Marcus's expression remained perfectly neutral.

"I don't remember."

Arthur did not push him.

He did not need to.

The room had already heard the pause.

General counsel requested a recess.

The directors left in small groups.

Elizabeth stepped into the hallway and finally let herself breathe.

Maya joined her.

"You okay?"

Elizabeth nodded.

"I don't know."

"That's a fair answer."

They walked toward a quiet window overlooking Manhattan.

Below them, traffic moved as if nothing had changed.

Elizabeth thought about the previous twelve hours.

At the gala, she had believed the worst thing that could happen was discovering Daniel would not defend her.

Now she was discovering their entire professional life had been built on decisions she had never been allowed to see.

Her phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number appeared.

YOU SHOULD CHECK THE NORTHSTAR VENDOR FILES BEFORE THE BOARD DOES.

Elizabeth showed Maya.

"Spam?"

Maya frowned.

"Maybe not."

A second message arrived.

LOOK FOR HART EVENTS CONSULTING.

Maya's face changed.

"Hart?"

Elizabeth immediately thought of Vivian.

"Could be unrelated."

Maya shook her head.

"Not with this family."

Elizabeth did not want another accusation.

She wanted facts.

They returned to Rebecca Sloan and showed her the messages.

Rebecca asked them not to search anything themselves.

"If there is a vendor issue, audit needs to preserve the source."

Within twenty minutes, Rebecca found Hart Events Consulting in Westbridge's approved vendor system.

The company had been added eight months earlier.

It provided executive hospitality, event coordination, and leadership retreat services.

The mailing address belonged to a small office suite in New Jersey.

The registered manager was Patricia Hart.

Daniel's aunt.

The same notary whose name appeared on Elizabeth's disputed signature.

Elizabeth felt cold.

"How much business did they get?"

Rebecca checked.

"Just under two hundred thousand dollars in eight months."

Maya whispered.

"That's not small."

Rebecca opened the approval chain.

The first approval belonged to Daniel.

The second belonged to Marcus Vale's office.

Arthur returned during the search.

Rebecca showed him the records.

He read silently.

Then he asked one question.

"Were these expenses connected to Northstar?"

Rebecca filtered the cost centers.

Three leadership retreats had been charged directly to Northstar implementation.

Elizabeth remembered one of them.

Daniel had spent a weekend at a resort in Connecticut and told her it was an executive planning session.

Vivian had posted photographs from the same resort that weekend.

Elizabeth had assumed she was nearby for a family trip.

Now Rebecca opened an invoice.

Flowers.

Private dining.

Luxury transportation.

A suite upgrade.

None of it looked like a strategy meeting.

Arthur's face became unreadable.

"Preserve everything."

The board reconvened at noon.

This time Marcus did not open the meeting.

Arthur did.

"The Northstar authorship review is now part of a broader governance inquiry."

Marcus objected immediately.

"On what basis?"

Arthur looked at him.

"Vendor approvals."

Vivian stood.

"This is outrageous."

Arthur ignored her.

Daniel looked at his mother.

That was enough.

Elizabeth saw the truth before anyone said it.

Daniel knew about Hart Events Consulting.

Maybe not everything.

But enough.

Arthur asked him directly.

"Did you approve payments to a company controlled by your aunt?"

Daniel swallowed.

"The services were real."

"Did you disclose the relationship?"

Daniel said nothing.

Marcus leaned toward his microphone.

"This meeting should be adjourned pending counsel review."

Arthur looked down the table.

"Agreed."

Marcus seemed surprised.

Arthur continued.

"And until that review is complete, Daniel Hart is suspended from all executive duties."

Vivian gasped.

Daniel stood so quickly his chair rolled backward.

"You can't do this."

Arthur met his eyes.

"The board just did."

Daniel looked toward Marcus.

Marcus did not look back.

That was when Daniel finally understood he had been left alone.

But as the directors began to leave, Vivian walked directly toward Elizabeth.

She stopped inches away.

"You think you've won."

Elizabeth did not move.

"This isn't a game."

Vivian smiled without warmth.

"You still don't know why Daniel chose you in the first place."

Elizabeth's expression changed.

May you like

Vivian leaned closer.

"Ask him who gave him your name."
