Chapter 10 - The Video That Changed the Story.
Elizabeth did not take the flash drive home.
She handed it directly to Rebecca Sloan and asked that the contents be preserved without modification.
Rebecca approved of the choice.
"Whatever is on this, chain of custody matters now."
By eight that evening, Rebecca had copied the drive in the presence of outside counsel.
There were twenty-three emails.
Most were between Daniel and Marcus.
Some were ordinary business messages.
Others were not.
One message from three weeks earlier made Elizabeth's hands go cold.
MARCUS: IF THE AUDIT MOVES, WE NEED A CREDIBILITY PROBLEM AROUND HER.
DANIEL: LEAVE ELIZABETH OUT OF THIS.
MARCUS: THEN CONTROL THE SITUATION BEFORE IT CONTROLS YOU.
Elizabeth read the exchange twice.
Daniel had not agreed.
But he had not reported it either.
Another message came two days later.
MARCUS: YOUR MOTHER UNDERSTANDS WHAT IS AT STAKE.
Daniel had replied with one word.
DON'T.
Rebecca sat back.
"This doesn't prove a plan, but it raises serious questions."
Elizabeth thought about Vivian walking toward her at the gala with that controlled expression.
She remembered the words delivered immediately after the confrontation.
Don't stand beside my son like you made him successful.
It had sounded spontaneous.
Now it sounded rehearsed.
The next morning, the board assembled at nine for the emergency vote.
Marcus had requested that the meeting begin with a video from the gala.
Elizabeth sat beside outside counsel as a witness.
Daniel sat alone in the guest row.
Vivian did not attend.
Marcus stood at the screen.
"No one disputes that Mr. Hart behaved poorly."
Elizabeth noticed the careful language.
"But governance cannot be driven by outrage."
He started the video.
The footage came from a guest's phone.
It began after Vivian had already struck Elizabeth.
That part was missing.
The first visible image showed Elizabeth pointing toward Vivian.
Her voice was raised.
"Everyone in this room saw what you did."
Then Daniel stepped toward her.
The camera shifted.
Elizabeth pulled her arm away.
The footage cut again just before Arthur caught Daniel's raised wrist.
The next image showed Arthur standing between them.
Marcus paused the screen.
"This is the moment Chairman Hale allowed a domestic confrontation to become a corporate action."
Arthur did not react.
Marcus continued.
"Within minutes, he canceled Daniel Hart's promotion."
One director interrupted.
"The Northstar audit was already active."
"Privately."
Marcus looked around the table.
"The chairman transformed it into public punishment."
Elizabeth finally understood the video.
It did not need to prove she planned anything.
It only needed to remove the beginning and blur the reason Arthur intervened.
Marcus looked toward her.
"Ms. Monroe had already begun asserting ownership of Northstar before the gala."
Elizabeth's attorney objected.
Marcus kept going.
"And last night, the confrontation gave Chairman Hale the emotional justification he needed to act."
Arthur spoke.
"Are you finished?"
Marcus smiled.
"Almost."
He turned to the directors.
"I move for an independent leadership review and temporary transfer of chair authority."
The room became still.
Before anyone seconded the motion, Rebecca entered through the side door.
She whispered to general counsel.
Counsel's expression changed.
Arthur looked over.
"Something relevant?"
Rebecca nodded.
"Very."
Marcus frowned.
"We're in the middle of a motion."
Arthur replied.
"Then the board should hear relevant evidence before voting."
Rebecca connected her laptop.
A second video appeared.
This one came from the ballroom's fixed security camera.
There was no audio.
But the angle covered the entire exchange from above.
Vivian approached Elizabeth first.
Daniel was standing beside his mother.
Marcus Vale was visible several yards away.
Elizabeth watched the recording carefully.
Thirty seconds before Vivian confronted her, Marcus walked past Vivian.
He slowed.
He leaned toward her.
He said something.
Vivian nodded.
Then Marcus stepped away and pulled out his phone.
Ten seconds later, Vivian approached Elizabeth.
Rebecca paused the image.
"We also obtained venue Wi-Fi logs."
Marcus's expression changed for the first time.
Rebecca continued.
"At this exact moment, Mr. Vale sent Mrs. Hart a message."
She enlarged the recovered text.
NOW.
No one moved.
Marcus stood very still.
Elizabeth looked at Daniel.
He appeared stunned.
Rebecca advanced the security footage.
Vivian confronted Elizabeth.
Her hand moved.
Elizabeth stepped back.
Daniel did nothing.
Then the rest unfolded exactly as Elizabeth remembered.
The board watched every second.
When the video ended, Arthur did not speak.
He did not need to.
One of the directors looked at Marcus.
"What did 'now' mean?"
Marcus gathered his papers.
"This meeting is becoming reckless."
The director repeated the question.
"What did it mean?"
Marcus did not answer.
Then the boardroom door opened again.
Vivian Hart walked in.

"I'll tell them."
