Chapter 3: The Descent

The ride to the Sterling Corporation’s private airfield was a blur of frantic phone calls.
Julian used every ounce of his executive access to try and override the lockdown at the mine, located halfway across the world in a remote valley.
In the back of the limousine, Maeve sat quietly.
Clara wrapped a cashmere blanket around the shivering woman. "Why did you come to me?" Julian asked, looking through the rearview mirror.
"Because I knew your mother," Maeve replied softly. "
Before she passed, she tried to stop Arthur. She built schools in our village.
She told me once that if her husband’s heart turned entirely to stone, I should look to her son. She said you had her heart."
Tears pricked Julian’s eyes. His mother had died in a tragic car accident when he was young—or so he was told.
