Chapter 7: The Weight of Water

The water in the lower corridor was freezing and up to Julian's chest.

Debris floated in the murky darkness.

He found the massive iron valve wheel. It was rusted and stiff.

Julian pushed with all his might, his muscles screaming.

Expendable, his father’s voice echoed in his mind.

He has her heart, Maeve’s voice countered.

He screamed, adrenaline and sheer willpower fueling him, and the wheel groaned, turning one inch, then two.

With a deafening mechanical screech, the primary locking mechanisms released.

The blast doors began to inch open.
