Chapter 6: Into the Deep

The control room was in chaos.

The water levels were critical.

The blast doors were holding back millions of gallons of muddy water, but behind them, the miners were running out of breathable air on the higher scaffolding.

"The electronic servos are dead," the chief engineer shouted as Julian burst into the room.

"The only way to open them is to manually turn the pressure valves in the lower corridor, but it's already flooded.

Whoever goes down there won't make it back before the surge hits."

Julian didn't hesitate.

He stripped off his tuxedo jacket.

"Julian, no!" Clara cried, grabbing his arm. "I have to, Clara.

My family put them there.

I have to be the one to get them out."

He kissed her, a desperate, passionate promise, and sprinted toward the lower levels.
