CHAPTER 1: THE NAME HE NEVER KNEW

The chapel no longer felt like a place for vows. It had become a courtroom of silence, shock, and shattered truths.

Nathan’s breathing turned uneven as he stepped back from the altar, his eyes darting between Margaret and the trembling attorney.

“That’s not possible,” he said, his voice low but breaking. “I was adopted… but my parents told me it was legal. Documented.”

Charles Whitman slowly opened the worn folder. “It was documented… but not completed. The adoption file was flagged, then mysteriously closed without authorization.”

Margaret collapsed into a chair, sobbing uncontrollably. “My baby was taken from the hospital. They told me he died. They never even let me see him again…”

Emily stood frozen, her world unraveling. “Nathan… what was your birth name?”

Nathan swallowed hard. “I… I don’t know. My parents said I was left at a private care facility. No records before that.”

Charles looked down at the file again.

Then he whispered, “His name was Daniel Hayes.”

Margaret gasped.

Emily staggered backward.

Nathan… was Daniel.

And the life he knew had just been erased.
