CHAPTER 3: A MOTHER’S LIE

Nathan drove through the night.
He didn’t remember the journey home, only the storm raging in his chest.
When he finally burst through the front door, Rebecca Reed was sitting calmly in the living room.
As if she had been waiting.
“You know,” she said softly.
Nathan’s fists clenched. “Tell me it’s not true.”
Rebecca stood slowly. Her face was unreadable.
“I couldn’t have children,” she said. “I tried for years. Your father left because of it.”
Nathan’s voice cracked. “So you stole one?!”
“I saved you,” she snapped suddenly. “You were unwanted. That hospital—”
“DON’T!” Nathan shouted. “You don’t get to rewrite this!”
Tears streamed down his face. “You stole me from my real family… and let them believe I was dead.”
Rebecca’s silence said everything.
Police sirens began to echo in the distance.
