Chapter 11 - The Bride Walked In Alone.

For the first time all morning, David moved without thinking.
He stepped in front of Olivia.
"Don't do this."
Olivia stopped.
"Move."
His voice softened immediately.
"Please."
She looked at him for several seconds.
"I am not ending our relationship in front of two hundred people."
David's shoulders dropped slightly.
"Then don't cancel the wedding."
"I'm postponing a legal commitment because I learned major things about your life thirty minutes before making it."
He shook his head.
"People will think—"
Olivia's expression hardened.
David stopped himself.
She noticed.
"Exactly."
He stepped aside.
Olivia walked through the hotel doors alone.
Her father followed several feet behind.
The ballroom doors opened.
The string quartet stopped mid-song.
Conversations dissolved into silence.
Emily remained on the terrace with the girls because she refused to let them become part of the announcement.
David stood between the terrace and the lobby, caught between chasing Olivia and facing his daughters.
He chose Olivia.
Emily watched him disappear through the doors.
Lily noticed too.
"He left again."
Emily crouched beside her.
"He needs to talk to Olivia."
Lily nodded, but her expression did not change.
Inside the ballroom, Olivia stepped onto the small platform where she had planned to exchange vows.
Her bouquet remained in her hand.
Her veil still fell perfectly behind her.
The scene looked like a wedding until she began speaking.
"Thank you all for being here."
Her voice trembled once.
Then it steadied.
"This morning has brought up important personal matters that David and I need to address privately."
A ripple moved through the guests.
David entered the ballroom and stopped near the back.
Olivia saw him.
She continued.
"Because of that, there will not be a ceremony today."
The room went utterly still.
"Please enjoy the meal that has already been prepared, and please know that your travel and support mean a great deal to me and my family."
David moved down the aisle.
"Olivia."
Every face turned toward him.
She held up one hand.
"Not here."
He stopped.
The photographer nearest the aisle lowered his camera without being asked.
Olivia stepped down from the platform and walked through a side door with her father.
The ballroom erupted into whispers only after she was gone.
David remained in the center aisle.
He had wanted everyone to see a flawless day.
Now everyone had seen the exact opposite.
Ryan approached him.
"We need to leave."
David turned slowly.
"You need to leave."
Ryan nodded.
"Fair."
He began walking away.
David called after him.
"You're fired."
Ryan stopped.
Several people nearby heard.
He turned back.
"You can make that formal on Monday."
David's eyes narrowed.
Ryan's voice remained calm.
"But firing me doesn't change the numbers."
Then he left.
David stood alone for a moment before Margaret entered from the terrace.
"Where are the girls?"
"With Emily."
David looked toward the doors.
"I'm going to talk to Olivia."
Margaret blocked his path.
"First, talk to your daughters."
He stared at her.
"Mom, my wedding just collapsed."
Margaret's expression changed.
"Your daughters have been waiting months for you to notice them."
David looked furious.
"Not now."
Margaret's reply was quiet.
"That has been your answer to everything."
David froze.
She stepped aside.
"Not now."
She repeated it.
"After the quarter."
Another step.
"After the deal."
Her voice softened.
"After the wedding."
David looked down.
Margaret continued.
"There will always be another after."
He did not answer.
On the terrace, Emily's phone rang.
It was her chief operating officer.
She almost ignored it.
Then she saw the subject line of the message that followed.
MERCER URBAN SYSTEMS - DISCLOSURE ISSUE.
Emily opened the attached memo.
Her expression changed immediately.
The canceled investment meeting was no longer just about weak finances.
