Chapter 2 - The Smile That Fell.

David had imagined dozens of things that could go wrong on his wedding morning.

Rain.

A delayed florist.

A nervous speech.

A missing ring.

Emily Carter walking up the red carpet with their daughters had never appeared on the list.

He looked down at her as though she had stepped out of a locked room inside his memory.

The last time he had seen Emily in person, she had been wearing jeans and an old gray sweater outside a mediator's office.

He remembered feeling relieved when she walked away.

He had mistaken exhaustion for defeat.

Now every guest at the Bellmere Grand was looking at the woman he had described as someone who wanted nothing to do with his new life.

Olivia's fingers tightened around her bouquet.

"David, answer me."

He forced air into his lungs.

"They're my daughters."

Olivia stared at him.

The bridesmaids behind her exchanged quick looks.

"Your daughters?"

David lowered his voice.

"I was going to explain."

Olivia's face changed.

"Before or after we got married?"

A photographer's shutter clicked from below.

David turned sharply toward the sound and realized that every small reaction was becoming part of the morning.

His mother, Margaret, stood three steps behind him with one hand pressed to her chest.

Unlike Olivia, she did not look shocked to see the girls.

She looked relieved.

That frightened David more.

Emily began walking toward the stairs.

Her daughters moved with her, their pale dresses bright against the red carpet.

Guests instinctively shifted to make space.

Nobody had asked them to.

Emily stopped at the first step.

She looked at Olivia before she looked at David.

"You must be Olivia."

Olivia swallowed.

"And you must be Emily."

There was no hostility in either woman's voice.

That made David feel exposed in a way an argument never could.

Emily nodded.

"Congratulations."

David took one step down.

"Emily, can we talk somewhere private?"

She met his eyes.

"We can, but the girls came to see you first."

Lily held a folded card against her chest.

David recognized the pink paper immediately.

She had shown it to him during a video call three weeks earlier.

It was the card she had made for his wedding.

On that call, Lily had asked if she and Sophie could come.

David had told her the ceremony was adults only.

That had been a lie.

Six children from Olivia's family were standing near the flower arch.

Lily noticed them too.

Her eyes moved from their formal clothes to her father.

"You said kids couldn't come."

The words landed softly.

David wished she had shouted.

A shout could be dismissed as emotion.

A child's simple memory could not.

Olivia turned toward the children from her side of the family.

Then she looked back at David.

"You told them children weren't invited?"

David rubbed his thumb against his cufflink.

"It was complicated."

Emily's eyes narrowed slightly.

"No."

She kept her voice calm.

"It was a sentence."

Margaret came down the stairs before David could respond.

She passed her son without looking at him and opened her arms to the girls.

"There are my sweethearts."

Sophie ran into her grandmother's embrace.

Lily followed more carefully.

David stared at his mother.

"You knew they were coming?"

Margaret stood up slowly.

"I hoped they would."

David's jaw tightened.

"Mom."

Margaret looked directly at him.

"Don't use that tone with me today."

The guests nearest them pretended not to listen.

They failed.

Olivia stepped down one stair.

"Margaret, did you invite them?"

Margaret glanced at Emily, then back at Olivia.

"I asked Emily to bring them because they should never have been excluded in the first place."

David's face hardened.

"This is my wedding."

Margaret's expression became almost sad.

"That's exactly why they should have been invited."

A long silence followed.

May you like

Then Olivia asked the question David had been avoiding for months.

"What else about your first marriage did you decide was too complicated to tell me?"
