Chapter 3 - The Card Lily Carried.

The wedding coordinator appeared at the edge of the staircase with a headset and a strained smile.

She looked from David to Olivia and seemed to understand immediately that no schedule could solve what was happening.

"We're ready inside whenever you are."

Olivia did not look at her.

"Give us ten minutes."

David answered at the same time.

"Two minutes."

The coordinator hesitated.

Olivia turned toward him.

"Ten."

He nodded because there were too many people watching to do anything else.

Emily led the girls toward a quieter terrace beside the entrance, but Olivia followed.

David followed Olivia.

Margaret followed David.

Within seconds, the private conversation David wanted had become the least private moment of his life.

Lily still held the folded pink card.

Emily noticed how tightly her daughter was gripping it.

"You don't have to give it to him right now."

Lily looked up.

"I made it for today."

David's expression softened for the first time.

He crouched down.

"Can I see it?"

Lily hesitated.

Then she handed him the card.

On the front she had drawn four people beneath a crooked yellow sun.

David recognized himself in a blue suit.

The girls stood on either side of him.

Emily was not in the picture.

Across the top, Lily had written in careful block letters, HAPPY WEDDING DADDY.

David opened the card.

Inside was one sentence.

I hope your new family likes your old family too.

He stopped breathing for a beat.

Olivia saw the words over his shoulder.

Her eyes closed briefly.

"David."

He stood up quickly and folded the card.

"She's five."

Emily's voice became colder.

"Exactly."

David looked at her.

"Don't make this into something it isn't."

Emily stared at him as if the sentence itself had answered every question.

"I'm not making anything."

She nodded toward Lily.

"She asked you directly."

David lowered his voice.

"We agreed not to put the girls in the middle."

"We did."

Emily's reply was immediate.

"That is why I didn't tell them you were embarrassed to have them here."

Olivia flinched.

David's eyes flashed.

"That's not true."

Margaret spoke from behind him.

"Then tell us what is true."

David turned.

His mother had never challenged him publicly before.

"I wanted one day without complications."

Lily looked down at her shoes.

Sophie moved closer to Emily.

The meaning of his words reached the adults first.

Then it reached the children.

Emily's posture changed.

She took both girls' hands.

"We're going inside for some water."

David stepped in front of her.

"Emily, that's not what I meant."

She did not raise her voice.

"Then choose better words."

Olivia stared at David.

Her confusion was slowly becoming something harder.

"When you told me they lived out of state, was that true?"

David did not answer immediately.

Emily did.

"We live twenty-eight minutes from your apartment."

Olivia's face went blank.

David looked at Emily with open disbelief.

"You didn't need to say that."

Olivia laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

"Apparently she did."

David looked around the terrace.

Two groomsmen had drifted close enough to hear.

His business partner, Ryan Cole, stood near the hotel doors pretending to check his phone.

David's humiliation sharpened into fear.

He had spent the last year building an image of a clean, uncomplicated future.

That image was also part of the story he had sold to investors.

Stable leadership.

Strong judgment.

Reliable character.

A polished personal brand.

Emily noticed Ryan before David did.

Ryan's eyes met hers.

Recognition flashed across his face.

He immediately straightened.

David caught the reaction.

"Do you two know each other?"

Ryan took a slow step forward.

"We've met."

David looked between them.

"Where?"

Ryan's answer changed the direction of the entire morning.

"At Carter Rowe Capital."

David's eyes narrowed.

"Why would Emily be at Carter Rowe Capital?"

Ryan looked at Emily, waiting for her to answer.

May you like

Emily adjusted Sophie's bow before meeting David's gaze.

"Because I founded it."
