Chapter 4 - The Name Behind the Door.

For several seconds, David seemed unable to connect the words he had heard.
Carter Rowe Capital was not a name anyone in his circle ignored.
The private investment firm had quietly acquired stakes in boutique hotels, technology companies, logistics firms, and commercial property across three states.
David had been trying to secure a meeting with the firm for nearly six months.
He had never gotten past a senior associate.
Now Emily stood in front of him and claimed she had founded it.
He almost smiled.
"That's not funny."
Ryan did not smile back.
"She's not joking."
David's eyes moved to Ryan.
"You knew?"
Ryan looked uncomfortable.
"I knew Emily Carter was the managing partner."
He glanced at the girls.
"I didn't know she was your former wife."
Olivia slowly lowered her bouquet.
"You told me Emily worked from home."
David's face tightened.
"She did when we were married."
Emily nodded.
"I did."
She spoke without defensiveness.
"I also worked after you went to sleep."
The sentence opened a door David did not want opened.
For years, he had treated Emily's late-night financial consulting as a hobby.
He had joked that her spreadsheets were less important than his client dinners.
He had never asked why certain calls came from New York after midnight.
He had never asked what happened to the small advisory company she started during their separation.
He had simply assumed that because he stopped paying attention, her work stopped mattering.
Margaret looked at Emily with surprise.
"You built Carter Rowe?"
Emily gave a small nod.
"With a partner."
"After the divorce?"
"Mostly."
David shoved both hands into his pockets.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Emily stared at him.
"You never asked."
The answer was so simple that Olivia looked away.
Ryan cleared his throat.
"David, we should probably talk later about the financing presentation."
David turned toward him sharply.
"Not now."
Ryan's jaw tightened.
"That's what I'm saying."
David's company, Mercer Urban Systems, had spent three years developing software for luxury residential buildings.
The product was promising.
The finances were not.
David needed a new funding round before the end of the quarter.
Carter Rowe had been his preferred target because the firm understood both property and technology.
For months, he had bragged that he could win them once they saw his presentation.
He had even told Olivia's father that the deal was practically inevitable.
Now the founder of that firm was standing at his wedding.
And she was holding the hands of the daughters he had hidden from half the room.
Olivia noticed the panic in his face.
"What financing presentation?"
David looked at Ryan.
Ryan looked at the floor.
Olivia's voice sharpened.
"David."
He tried to recover his old confidence.
"It's business."
"You told my father your company was fully funded through next year."
David's silence lasted one second too long.
Emily did not speak.
She did not need to.
Olivia looked between the two men.
"Was that also complicated?"
David's shoulders stiffened.
"I was handling it."
Ryan rubbed his forehead.
"We were trying to handle it."
David shot him a warning look.
Ryan ignored it.
"The next round matters."
Olivia stared at David.
"How much?"
"Not here."
"How much?"
Ryan answered quietly.
"Eight million."
The terrace went still again.
Olivia's father, Thomas Grant, had just stepped through the hotel doors in time to hear the number.
He was a reserved man in his early sixties who rarely needed to raise his voice.
"Eight million what?"
David's face changed instantly.
"Thomas, good morning."
Thomas did not return the greeting.
"Eight million what?"
Ryan looked trapped.
Emily looked at David.
David looked at the staircase as though the wedding itself might rescue him.
It did not.
Thomas stepped closer.
"You told me last night your company did not need outside capital."
David straightened his jacket.
"We don't need it in the way you're thinking."
Thomas's expression hardened.
"Then explain the way I should be thinking."
Before David could answer, the hotel general manager approached Emily.
He greeted her with unmistakable respect.
"Ms. Carter, I'm sorry to interrupt."
David stared.
The manager continued.
"The board is waiting for your approval on the Bellmere renewal before noon."
Olivia turned slowly toward Emily.
"You have business with this hotel too?"
May you like
Emily's eyes remained on David.
"Carter Rowe owns forty-two percent of the Bellmere Group."
