Chapter 21: The Roots We Choose

Chapter 21: The Roots We Choose

The jacaranda did not bloom all at once.

It never had.

Its blossoms came in waves—petals opening slowly, patiently, as if the tree itself understood that beauty, like healing, was never meant to arrive in a single moment.

Mateo watched the petals fall like soft purple rain.

Sofia had abandoned her digging and now danced beneath the branches, trying to catch them midair. Her laughter carried across the yard, light and unburdened, untouched by the weight of the past.

Mateo leaned forward slightly, resting his hands on his cane.

“Do you remember,” he said quietly, “the day we planted it?”

Laura smiled without looking up from her knitting.

“I remember you said it wouldn’t survive.”

Mateo chuckled.

“I said we might not survive.”

Laura finally looked at him then, her eyes soft but steady.

“And we were both wrong.”

Across the yard, Emiliano called out instructions to his son, teaching him how to aim the ball, how to steady his stance. His voice was calm, patient—the kind of voice Mateo had never known as a child.

Mateo studied him carefully.

“You did good,” Mateo said.

Emiliano glanced back.

“For what?”

“For choosing differently.”

Emiliano walked over, brushing dirt from his hands.

“It wasn’t a choice at first,” he admitted. “It was survival. But somewhere along the way… it became something else.”

Mateo nodded slowly.

“That’s how it happens.”

Sofia ran toward them, holding up her small hands.

“Look! The flower is standing!”

They all turned.

The tiny marigold stood upright in the soil, fragile but defiant.

Mateo felt something tighten in his chest.

Not pain.

Something fuller.

Something complete.

“Every strong thing starts small,” he said.

Sofia grinned.

“Even trees?”

“Especially trees.”

Laura placed her knitting aside and stood.

“Come,” she said gently. “Lunch is ready.”

As they gathered around the table beneath the jacaranda, Mateo looked up one last time at the spreading canopy.

Roots below.

Branches above.

May you like

And in between…

a life that had finally learned how to grow without fear.
