Chapter 22: Echoes of Tomorrow

The following weeks passed in a rhythm so steady it almost felt unreal.
Morning light filtered through the jacaranda branches. Coffee steamed on the porch. Children’s laughter replaced silence. The house no longer carried echoes—it created new ones.
Jimena lingered longer than planned.
“I don’t want to leave,” she confessed one evening.
Laura smiled knowingly.
“You don’t have to rush back to everything.”
Jimena shook her head.
“It’s not that. It’s just… here, things feel simpler. Like they make sense.”
Mateo, sitting nearby, spoke softly.
“They make sense because they are honest.”
Jimena looked at him.
“You always talk like that,” she teased.
Mateo shrugged.
“I didn’t used to.”
Emiliano joined them, carrying two cups of tea.
“We used to hide everything,” he said.
Silence settled between them.
Not heavy.
Just thoughtful.
Jimena exhaled slowly.
“I spent years trying to understand where we came from,” she admitted. “Trying to make it neat. Logical. Something I could explain.”
“And now?” Mateo asked.
She smiled faintly.
“Now I think… maybe it doesn’t need to be explained. Maybe it just needs to be lived.”
Mateo leaned back.
“That’s wisdom,” he said.
Sofia burst through the screen door.
“Abuela! The flower is bigger!”
Laura laughed.
“It’s been three days, cariño.”
“It’s still bigger!”
They all stood and walked outside.
The marigold had grown just slightly—its leaves stretching outward, reaching for sunlight.
Jimena crouched beside it.
“It doesn’t know anything about the past,” she said quietly.
Mateo nodded.
“And that’s its greatest strength.”
Emiliano placed a hand on his sister’s shoulder.
“We gave them something we never had,” he said.
Jimena looked at her brother.
“What’s that?”
“A beginning without fear.”

Above them, the jacaranda rustled softly.
As if it agreed.
