Chapter 24: What Remains

Time moved quietly after the storm.
Summer approached, bringing longer days and softer nights.
Mateo spent more time in his chair now.
Not because he had to.
But because he wanted to watch.
Everything.
Laura noticed.
“You’re observing again,” she said.
He smiled faintly.
“I spent half my life trying to escape time. Now I just want to understand it.”
She reached for his hand.
“And what have you learned?”
Mateo looked out at the yard.
“That it doesn’t take things away,” he said. “It transforms them.”
Emiliano joined them, sitting on the steps.
“I’ve been offered a position,” he said.
“In the city.”
Laura looked at him.
“Will you take it?”
He hesitated.
“It’s a good opportunity. But… it means leaving this place.”
Mateo nodded slowly.
“You won’t lose it,” he said.
Emiliano frowned.
“It feels like I would.”
Mateo shook his head.
“This isn’t the place,” he said, tapping his chest lightly. “It’s what you carry.”
Emiliano sat quietly.
“I just don’t want my children to forget.”
“They won’t,” Laura said firmly. “Because you won’t let them.”
Sofia ran up again, holding a small purple petal.
“It fell,” she said.
Mateo took it gently.
“All beautiful things fall eventually,” he said.
Sofia’s face fell.
“But they grow again.”
She smiled.
“Okay.”
That evening, as the sun set behind the jacaranda, Mateo felt something shift inside him.
Not fear.
Not pain.
Just… stillness.
A deep, peaceful kind of stillness.
He squeezed Laura’s hand.
“Whatever happens next,” he said, “we did it right.”
Laura leaned her head on his shoulder.
May you like
“Yes,” she whispered.
“We did.”
