Chapter 11 - The House Turns Against Him.

The plan to call Julian lasted less than fifteen minutes before Adrian's life cracked open in a new direction.

Two federal financial investigators arrived at the estate with a warrant.

They did not come for Celeste.

They came for Adrian.

The forged transfers from Lily's trust had been routed through accounts carrying his digital authorization, his tax identification, and security confirmations sent from his private office.

On paper, Adrian looked like the center of the scheme.

One investigator placed a folder on the dining table.

"Mr. Vale, did you authorize these transfers?"

"No."

"Did you benefit from them?"

"No."

The investigator turned a page.

A payment of four million dollars had moved into a holding company Adrian owned.

Adrian had never seen the transaction.

Celeste looked almost as stunned as he felt.

Martin leaned toward the document.

"That company was dormant."

"Not anymore," the investigator replied.

Adrian understood the strategy immediately.

Julian had not only stolen from Lily.

He had built a trail designed to make Adrian look responsible when the theft was discovered.

The house itself became evidence.

Computers were seized.

Files were boxed.

Officers photographed the hidden rooms and questioned employees.

For the first time in his life, Adrian could not solve the problem by ordering people to leave.

He had to stand still while strangers searched every part of his home.

Lily watched from the top of the staircase with Nora beside her.

Adrian forced himself to smile at her.

She did not smile back.

"Are they taking you away?" she asked.

The question cut deeper than any accusation.

Adrian walked upstairs and knelt.

"No one is taking me away from you."

One of the investigators cleared his throat behind him.

"Mr. Vale, we do need you downtown for a formal interview."

Lily's face crumpled.

Adrian closed his eyes for half a second.

"I will come back."

"Promise?"

"Promise."

Nora held Lily's hand as Adrian left the mansion.

During four hours of questioning, Adrian learned how carefully Julian had prepared the trap.

Transfers carried legitimate authentication codes.

Emails appeared to come from Adrian's account.

One message instructed Gideon to "protect the family structure at any cost."

Adrian had never written it.

The investigators did not arrest him, but they ordered him not to move funds or leave the country.

When he returned after dark, the mansion felt hollow.

Nora met him at the entrance.

"Lily is asleep."

Adrian loosened his tie.

"Did Celeste make the call?"

"She tried."

"Tried?"

Nora handed him a phone.

A text had arrived on Celeste's private line from an unknown number.

NO CALLS.

MIDNIGHT.

THE OLD CHAPEL.

BRING THE ORIGINAL PAGE AND THE RABBIT.

Adrian stared at the final words.

"Why the rabbit?"

Nora's expression changed.

They both looked toward the staircase.

Lily had carried the stuffed rabbit everywhere since infancy.

Evelyn had given it to her shortly before she died.

The key and the paper tube had already been hidden inside it.

Adrian suddenly understood something they had missed.

They had searched the rabbit once.

They had never searched the rabbit completely.

Nora brought it downstairs while Lily slept.

Adrian carefully felt along every seam.

Inside one stuffed ear, his fingers found something hard and flat.

He opened a small section of stitching.

A tiny memory card fell into his palm.

Martin inserted it into an isolated laptop.

One audio file appeared.

The date was three days before Evelyn's fatal crash.

Adrian pressed play.

Evelyn's voice filled the room.

"Julian, if anything happens to me, Adrian will learn what you and Gideon have done."

A man's voice answered.

"Then make sure nothing happens to you."

Adrian knew that voice.

He had heard it at the gala.

Alexander Voss had toasted his family's generosity while standing beneath the chandelier.
